Five things you need to know about Willie Taggart's new hires

With the hiring of Maryland assistant coach Walt Bell as offensive coordinator and the move of former Oregon staffer David Kelly to an on-field role as wide receivers coach, Willie Taggart has apparently finalized his first coaching staff at Florida State.

With that in mind, let's take a look at five things you need to know about the new hires:

Like predecessor Jimbo Fisher and even legendary Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden, who called plays through the prime of his career, Willie Taggart is expected to have his hands all over the Seminoles' offense.

Taggart called plays for most of his time at USF and again at Oregon, and he publicly lamented his previous decision to give up play-calling for awhile with the Bulls. And there is every indication that Taggart plans to run the offense at Florida State as well.

But the hiring of Walt Bell is interesting because Bell was the play-caller at Maryland and is a very young, up-and-coming coach who wouldn't appear to be content to stay completely in the background the way a James Coley or Randy Sanders did for years under Fisher. That lack of input and control was what drove Coley to leave for another job, and it likely would have caused Sanders to leave this offseason if Fisher had remained at Florida State.

Bell was in a very good situation at Maryland, earning just over $500,000 a year and getting to run an offense in the Big Ten. So, it's not as if the FSU job will be some enormous break where Bell will take it with any and all limitations. With that in mind, expect Bell to have real input into the offense, although Taggart likely will be the primary play-caller.
