James, who played two seasons for the Seminoles after transferring from Pensacola Junior College, was taken by the Florida Marlins in the 20th round (pick #608). James anchored the bullpen for the Tribe for the first season and a half of his FSU career before finishing up the last half of the 2004 season as the ace of the weekend starting rotation. James' currently has a career record of 12-6 with and ERA of 3.35 heading into the super regionals this weekend against Arkansas. In 64 appearances (149.2 innings), James struck out 150 and walk 56 batters. Opposing hitters managed only a .227 batting average against him.
Zech, who started at second base for all four years of his Florida State career, was often maligned by fans for his inconsistent defense and bat, which never seemed to gel at the same time - until 2004. This season, Zech turned in a fantastic year, and is currently hitting .347, good enough for third on the team and has become a fan favorite.. During his four-year Seminole career, Zech started 228 games, had a batting average of .302, and scored 209 runs for the Garnet and Gold. The New York Mets selected him in the 24th round (pick #704).
Cannon transferred to FSU from South Florida Community College and has played two season for the Noles. After bullpen work for the entire 2003 season (save for one disastrous start against Florida), Cannon moved to the starting rotation in 2004, and has stayed in that spot for most of the season. After a stellar first two months, Cannon was named as a mid-season All-American by Baseball America before going through a rough patch in the middle of the season. A mid-week no-decision against the Florida Gators on May 12 when he pitched 7.1 innings of one-run ball, seemed to turn things around for the right-hander who has since had good outings against Wake Forest on May 21st, and Bethune-Cookman in last weekend's regionals where he threw the first complete game of his career. Cannon was selected in the 44th round (pick #1317) by the Toronto Blue Jays. He had been previously picked by the New York Mets in 2000 (49th round) and in 2001 (45th round).
