Florida State picked up commitment No. 16 on Wednesday evening when Columbia (Lake City, Fla.) safety Trey Marshall announced on national television that he is headed to Florida State.
It was no secret how much the No. 30 rated safety loved Florida State. He made multiple visits this year, including a spring game visit with his mother. On Wednesday evening he felt ready to make his decision. He made his announcement on ESPNU during a broadcast of The Opening's 7-on-7 event at Nike's World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.
Why did he pick FSU?
"It's tradition, close to home and the things they've been doing the past couple of years," he told Warchant.com.
Although he grew up a Florida fan, his interest in FSU really started to take off when Jeremy Pruitt was named defensive coordinator at FSU.
"He's been recruiting me since I was a freshman at Columbia. I love being around Coach Pruitt," Marshall told Warchant.com this spring. "With his defense, I love blitzing and we do that a lot with our defense here (Columbia), so it wouldn't be that hard of a transition for me."
What stood out about Pruitt?
"His term at Alabama, the guys he's coached, what they've become," he said.
Marshall's head coach Brian Allen had high praise for his star safety when we stopped by Columbia during the Warchant.com recruiting tour.
"I think he's becoming a student of the game in what I've observed in the spring," Allen said. "He's the guy calling the plays in the huddle, making the checks and his leadership is coming out. He's had a tremendous off season from January to May in weightlifting. He's a kid that is benching over 300 pounds for the first time in his career and power cleaning over 300 for the first time. He's in our 300 pound club, so that's going to give him a solid advantage heading into college."
Marshall picked FSU over Ole Miss. He is a 6-foot, 192-lb. defensive back and is expected to play both boundary corner and safety in college. He runs a 4.38 40-yard dash.
