Joey Volini had allowed six earned runs in his seven starts coming in to Saturday's game. But Volini left the ball up in the zone far too often, and Wake made him pay.
But Jimmy Keenan hit a home run and Dalton Wentz hit a three-run home run to chase Volini in the third inning as he gave up seven runs in Wake Forest's 12-0 win over Florida State in seven innings.
The Seminoles (25-5, 8-3 ACC) were shut out for the first time in 30 games, suffering their most lopsided defeat of 2025. All but one of FSU's losses have been by five runs or more, and this was the ugliest — one night after a wild win with Max Williams' walk-off RBI single in the ninth inning.
But on Saturday it was a far different story from the start. Gage Harrelson had a pair of singles as FSU managed just three hits. The Seminoles struck out 10 times.
Alex Lodise had a walk to put him on base in 28 of 30 games this season.
Volini (7-1) saw his ERA rise from 1.25 to 2.56.
Logan Lunceford (5-2) pitched 5.2 shutout innings for Wake
One bright spot for FSU was left-hander Payton Manca, who allowed just one earned run in three innings. He had four strikeouts and gave up a walk, eating up significant innings as FSU was able to preserve arms for the finale on Sunday.
Up next
Left-hander Wes Mendes will be on the mound as FSU looks to win its eighth straight weekend series on Sunday against Wake Forest. The game will begin at 1 p.m. (ACC Network Extra).
