Florida State hosts homecoming and Duke this weekend, with the bowl eligible Blue Devils bringing a capable offense to town for a 3:30 kickoff. The news surrounding Florida State this week began on a sour note as the injury bug took a big bite out of the running back rotation.
Life without Thompson
The injury bug had not significantly bitten into Florida State since defensive end Brandon Jenkins went down for the season in early September. But against Miami last weekend, the Seminoles were dealt a blow when senior running back Chris Thompson left the game after a big first half catch. Monday morning brought the worst kind of news as Thompson was declared out for the season with a torn ACL.
Head coach Jimbo Fisher said that sophomore James Wilder Jr. would be moved up to the top spot on the depth chart, but did qualify that announcement by saying he believed the running back situation would be a "co-starter" platoon moving forward. Working to rest
It wasn't overtly stated in Monday's press conference, but the message was clear. Florida State is tired, and coach Fisher's team needs its upcoming bye week. Because of the 8pm start the previous week and a late arrival back home, the Seminoles worked in shorts Monday. Listening to the indirect language from the coaches and players, and it quickly becomes apparent that after Duke, FSU will take a couple of days away from the field.
Specialty changes
After punt returner Rashad Greene fumbled another try in Miami Gardens - one that went out of bounds - coach Fisher said he was open to the idea of giving another player a shot to return punts. It didn't take long to make an official switch as after practice on Tuesday, Fisher said Tyler Hunter has taken over duties as top punt returner.
