It's been rumored since he took an official visit earlier this month, but on Monday Aiken, South Carolina's Dekoda Watson and his family made it official by committing to Florida State. Why is a South Carolina linebacker headed to Tallahassee?
"One of the first things is he's always been a Florida State fan," father Gregory Watson told Warchant.com. "It was his dream to go to Florida State. Along with that, the campus, the coaches and the Christian atmosphere we got with the coaches and their beliefs. That kind of turned it for him... We are excited for him and excited to be a part of Florida State football."
Until the December North Carolina-South Carolina Shrine Bowl, Watson wasn't even on FSU's radar. However, he had a huge game picking up nine tackles (five solo), three for a loss and one sack and earned MVP honors in the process. A couple Seminole coaches were on hand and offered a scholarship shortly thereafter. After his official visit a couple weeks ago, it became obvious he was headed to Tallahassee to play his college ball.
The three-star linebacker selected FSU over Tennessee, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.
At South Aiken High School, Watson played defensive end and racked up 123 tackles (32 for loss) and 11 sacks. He played linebacker at the Shrine Bowl and will likely stay at that position at FSU.
"Florida State, they are looking at him as a hybrid," Gregory Watson said. "Sometimes he'll be at linebacker and sometime at defensive end."
During the weigh-in at the Athens NIKE Camp last May, Watson checked in at only 206 pounds. Since then he has grown quite a bit and currently weighs 223 pounds and says he hasn't lost any speed.
