Will Weatherford commit early

There are probably a couple dozen prep quarterbacks that can boast of gaudy passing numbers. However, when it comes to one of the most important stats for judging quarterbacks Drew Weatherford is in a class of his own. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound signal caller had an amazing 37-to-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio last season. That combined with his 70-percent completion percentage and 2,494 passing yards equates to a 159.7 quarterback rating. To put that in perspective the highest single season rating in the NFL is 112.8 by Steve Young in 1994.

What is his secret?

"I just kind of go out there and react," Weatherford told Warchant.com. "I was fortunate enough to have a good team around me that helped me out a lot and my offensive line did a wonderful job. I just delivered the ball the best I possibly could."

Of course the level of competition is much different but numbers like those aren't posted by average quarterbacks at any level. Not surprisingly schools are standing up and taking notice to the tune of nearly 30 scholarship offers. One of the most recent offers came from his childhood favorite Florida State.

"I actually grew up a huge Florida State fan and it's kind of always been my favorite team growing up as a kid," Weatherford said. "Nothing has really changed. I'm still very interested. I've had the opportunity to go to a few games and the atmosphere there is like nowhere else. I also had the opportunity to meet the coaches and we seem to have good chemistry. They have everything I'm looking for in a school right now."

With his love from the Seminoles and the recent offer there has been speculation that a commitment could come any day now. Is there any truth to that rumor?

"Right now it's really wide open," he said. "I have about five schools now and

Florida State is definitely one of the top ones. Right now I'm just talking to my friends and family and praying about it. I'm not exactly sure when I'm going to make my decision. It's going to come whenever in my heart I've just decided."

In addition to FSU, Weatherford has a strong interest in Tennessee and Auburn followed by Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and NC State. All of these schools except for Georgia have offered scholarships.

This summer Weatherford is enjoying the camp experience. So far he has been to Georgia and Tennessee and next month will make his way to the Auburn and Florida State camps. He also hopes to be invited to the Elite 11 Quarterback Camp to be held in California in late July. When his summer tour ends he should be closer to making a decision.

"In the next couple weeks I want to narrow it down to probably about five definitely and put them in order too," he said. "I'm going to do that after I get the chance to finish my trips this summer, the camps."

In addition to narrowing his list, what are the chances that he might decide prior to the start of his senior season?

"I think they might be good," he said. "There's a good chance if I feel that there is one school just taking me over. If I know the school I'm going to end up at there's no reason to prolong it. I'm just going to go ahead and do it."

Complicating matters is the fact that six highly regarded prep quarterbacks are strongly considering Florida State. In addition to Weatherford that list includes Xavier Lee, Rhett Bomar, Anthony Morelli, Cornelius Ingram and Robbie Reid. With the lack of depth at the position the Seminole coaches probably wouldn't mind having two of these signal callers. That could be a problem for some recruits but not for Weatherford.

"I'd like it," he said. "I think having a chance like that to go to a school and compete with another good quarterback is just going to make you better in the long run. That's what I'm going to try to do. If two of us end up at the same school may the best man win the job. It will make the team better and it will make you personally better. That doesn't scare me at all. It doesn't bother me and I don't think that will affect my decision."
