SHREVEPORT, La. -- The Willie Taggart Era is officially here. And it begins with two big streaks still intact.

The Florida State Seminoles already had the longest bowl streak in NCAA history and on Wednesday they also extended the consecutive-winning-season streak to 41 years with a 42-13 win over Southern Miss in Shreveport.

The Seminoles won the final four games of 2017 to finish 7-6 on the season. And their most impressive win of the bunch was on Wednesday as they dominated the Golden Eagles in almost-freezing temperatures.

With Taggart looking on from a suite inside the stadium, Independence Bowl MVP James Blackman completed 18 of 28 passes for 233 yards and a bowl record 4 TD passes - three to junior Auden Tate - as the Seminoles' offense ran up and down the field over an overmatched Southern Miss defense.

And it was overmatched from the beginning as the first half was dominated by the Seminoles.

Southern Miss scored on its first drive of the game, but that because FSU roughed the punter after getting a three-and-out. After that initial score, the rest of the half was controlled by FSU.

The Golden Eagles managed just 86 yards in their next five possessions. Meanwhile, Florida State racked up 251 - highlighted by Blackman's performance.

The true freshman QB threw three touchdown passes - two to Tate - and had another one dropped. He still was 10 of 16 for 137 yards in the first two quarters and also added another 27 yards rushing.

Fellow true freshman Cam Akers broke the 1,000-yard barrier in the first half, finishing with 70 yards on nine carries before halftime. He then broke Dalvin Cook's school record for rushing yards by a freshman early in the second half with a 17-yard run around right end.

Akers finished with 94 yards on 13 carries in the game and 1,024 on the season.
