Head football coach Jimbo Fisher's current contract pays him approximately $2.75 million annually, plus bonuses, and runs through the 2016 season. His request for a one-year extension last year was not granted by the university.

As Warchant.com first reported last month, there was nothing really in the works for putting together a new contract or extension at that time. That has changed.

We have been told by a highly placed source that president Eric Barron has delegated the negotiation and development of Jimbo Fisher's new contact to new athletic director Stan Wilcox. This is significant because Barron didn't hand this responsibility off to former athletic director Randy Spetman when this came up late last year and earlier this year.

Furthermore we've been told that the new contract will be "extremely competitive" with the highest paid coaches in the country. As was reported in a recent USA Today article, Fisher is currently the 21st highest paid coach in college football. He will make a huge leap up that list when the new deal is finalized.

We didn't get exact figures, probably because the deal is still being finalized, but based on what we've heard from a couple sources it's safe to say it will be in the $4 million per year or higher range when finalized. That means Fisher should be among the 10 highest paid coaches when all is said and one (and possibly top five).

The term will at least be five years or possibly longer. It doesn't sound like that part had been worked out yet.

A deal is expected to be reached soon with the official announcement coming at the conclusion of the regular season (right before or after the ACC Championship game).

Of course nothing is final until the contract is signed but it's safe to say that FSU is working towards making a serious commitment to Jimbo Fisher in hopes of keeping in Tallahassee for a long time.

The return on investment for this will be well worth it. I'd love to see an official study/analysis done based on a college football teams success and the ROI of that. i.e. school enrollment #'s and what they actually means $ wise to the schools, team memoribelia, ticket sales, new boosters etc....... The $4 million of whatever we pay Jimbo is NOTHING compared to what his success on the football field will bring not only this athletic department but University for years to come.

Get it done, I want Fisher here as long as Bowden was here.

The timing of this is good I think. Far enough along in the season with very consistent results. Our head coach needs to keep his mind on one thing other than his family and that is a championship run. He has proven himself in every aspect of a good coach. I love his tenacity but show great tact. His ability to grow has been my most favorite attribute, very evident this year. Many will give credit to the new assistant coaches, as we should but remember Jimbo hired them. Great recruiter, classy coach and reprensents FSU very well.

I was under the impression that he hated athletics and was on the verge of turning us into UVA athletically. Is that not correct?

This. We are also going to have to give Pruitt more money imo. Odell and Dawsey should get raises as well imo.

I guess I am in the minority here, 2012 was a great team but still disappointing with losses against NC ST and UF, now we are on track and things look great but I still think everything needs to play out before giving a guy a huge 68% raise.  If we brings a title home then yea he's earned it but think we need to let things play out.

He deserves a raise and extension even if we don't win the title this year.

This... and with the new playoff system, he looks like a genius for debunking any talks of leaving the ACC. We take care of business and its a relatively easy road to the playoff.

I hated the decision intitially, but looking at us in the driver seat with the remaining four games... im eating crow.

Thanks Dot, good to hear. I know you can't hold everyone back from promotion, but we start winning a lot of games hate to lose coaches to other teams because of "SEC" pay. I know FSU only has so much $$$.

As far as Fisher not earning it and waiting longer, I disagree. If you look at the other coaches on that list, he is worth it. It's "competitive pay", same thing that goes on at any job.

Have to keep up - there would be other teams who most certainly offer a better deal and we would be left where? Part of being a good AD is being able to project into the future - Take a look at where the football program started and where it is today and make a decision for the future. This shows that our AD see's the direction the program is headed under Fisher and it is only responsible of him to get this deal done. This is what a lot of us have been preaching for a while now. You can always look back at last year or point to this year, but you have to also be proactive and not reactive. This is a very smart move for our football program and university as a whole.

What would you suggest if we go 13-1, losing to Bama in the title game, when preseason picks had us 11-2 or 10-3 in the Chik Fil-a Bowl?

Let him be happy with a 3 year deal?

Come on, man............

A question and a statement;

For those who are number guys or know the school well...if you could put a number out there...what type of financial boost does the school get for making to the acccg and winning it? What kind of boost does the school get from making it to a bcs, particularly to nc and winning it?

Also I would think his assistant salaries are a part of the talks as far as his own conteact goes. Meaning...you gotta give me this much to work with so I can get and keep the coaches I want. Thoughts?

So only if we go undefeated every season does our coach deserve a raise? This is a ridiculous post. A season where we lose only 2 games, win the conference and a bcs bowl is a success by any measure. Fisher has built this program from a perennial 7-6 type, underachieving team to what we see today. Yea we lost by a point on the road to NCState. But prior to Fisher taking over we had been shut out at home by Wake Forest. If you don't see the steady improvement each year on our way back to becoming a national title contender, and the pieces in place for a sustained high level of success, then you're probably the only one in the country that doesn't. If we don't pay him somebody else certainly will.

Get it done.  That is great news and well deserved.  Hopefully we can keep Sunseri, Pruitt and the rest of the staff intact for a full year.

Jimbo has done great things and I am very proud to be a NOLE Booster!  Thank you (team, staff and everyone on this board for being true nole fans)!

Let's roll (one week at a time) and if possible roll the tide out of the MNC. (ok, seriously... 1FD... Kid_A.... we gotta make a tide box in seminole colors... ya feel me?)

I concur in regards to his assistants.  I think Pruitt, and the whole defensive staffs needs to be on par with LSU and Bama assistants.  I think Pruitt deserves close to Chavis type money........with his recruiting alone.

About freaking time.

Yes 4mil or higher is good with me. Jimbo has shown he can keep the team focused further with the stomping at Wake. I see no reason why he shoulldn't be in the top 4 of 8 of highest paid.

Something makes me think when Bobby Bowden made that comment at his press conference at the NC State game, "FSU's gonna have to get their checkbook out too", something makes me think that got back around to Barron and Wilcox or they saw it themselves, I'm not sure if they were present in the room for that press conference or not. I mean it was a no brainer he was getting a raise and an extension, but most of us were penciling 3.5mill to be the figure, now it's more like 4 - 4.5mil with probably a 6 year contract.

I just know that before that little comment was made it seemed like FSU was sitting on it's hands and the feeling was more of a 1 year addition and a salary of 3.5mil, now they are going to put him up in the elite area, something sparked that.

I bet you though there will be a performance clause in that contract. I can see something stating that if Jimbo didn't maintain a certain win loss record and bowl wins that the buyout on the contract fall precipitously. It's not that FSU can't afford to pay Jimbo 4.5-5mil a year, it's the fact of the buyout if he doesn't pan out and we want another coach, that's where it gets sticky for FSU. Because then we are paying 10mil a year instead of 5mil. More and more companies are going to a performance based salary these days and it's a good thing, it keeps everyone motivated. Static salaries just don't work unless you find that rare breed that just wants to work their asses off for the same amount. Which with every generation is fading and fading.

I guess now we get to see if Wilcox was the right guy, how he sets up this contract will probably determine his fate at FSU.
11/12 1:51 PM | IP: Logged
This $$ will be made up tenfold by increases in: ticket purchases, merchandise sales, enrollment applications, marketing and publicity, etc.etc.etc....
11/12 1:51 PM | IP: Logged

I think Jimbo would be willing to take a little less to make sure his assistants get paid, too.

He knows FSU has to watch its pennies, like it or not.

Just a hunch
