The War Room

Welcome to The War Room. I'll begin this session with the ground rules. Everything that is reported in the War Room must stay in the War Room. That's the way this deal works. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed outside the Tribal Council. This is a special feature for subscribers only. The reason why it is posted on the premium board is because it's the only way to ensure that the info stays exclusive to Seminole Nation. That means not to post on the Rivals national message board, any message board outside of the Tribal Council or on social media.

Additional Note: Everything noted in this War Room comes from a reliable source but it may not be something we want, or have enough on, to write a full-blown story about. We want to let our readers know what we are hearing so are passing some news tidbits and notes along in this feature.

Freshmen/Newcomers standing out so far

So far, the reports are all A's for the incoming class of newcomers. Been told by a source inside the football program that everybody that has arrived from the 2014 class has lived up to expectations and a few have even exceeded it - both in how they have looked and performed physically, and how they have conducted themselves away from the field. Of course, these are just first impressions. The real test starts next week when practices start up.

Here are the main newcomers that we have been hearing rave reports about:

Derrick Nnadi - Probably the player we've been hearing the most about since he reported last month. Already posting amazing numbers in the weight room, and we've been told he's "more athletic than Timmy Jernigan." Will see some PT this season.

Demarcus Christmas - Just a man child. Big, physical 300-pound-plus and athletic. Another freshman DT that should see time this fall.

Rick Leonard - Weighing in at over 270 pounds Leonard is extremely quick and athletic. The staff is giddy about his potential.

Mavin Saunders - A bit of an unknown because he was only a three-star out of Texas. He hasn't played that much football because he focused on basketball for most of his life. But is picking up the system quickly and excelling in the player-run passing sessions.

Trey Marshall - The staff has been raving about Marshall since he arrived on campus in January as an early enrollee. Even though the depth chart is packed at safety, most expect Marshall to see some PT this season and vie for a starting spot in 2015.

Corey Martinez - Another recruit that didn't receive a ton of hype coming out of high school. But the staff is excited about how he has quickly taken to the system and is in great shape. Obviously with five senior starters, he may not play this season, but there's a very good chance he'll be a major contender for a starting guard spot in 2015.

Arthur Williams - Well over 300 pounds and a monster. Looks like another three-star gem found by Jimbo Fisher and his staff.

Travis Rudolph/Ermon Lane - As good as advertised so far. Both should see playing time (if not significant time) this fall.

Malique Jackson - Maybe the best athlete on the team. Great cover skills for a guy that has barely played defensive back.

Chad Mavety/Kareem Are - Are came on strong at the end of spring practice and Mavety is drawing similar praise. With Bobby Hart reportedly a bit out of shape, don't be surprised if Mavety pushes him for a starting job.

Special jersey game this season

It's been five years since Florida State donned anything but the traditional garnet jerseys at home, but that will change this fall. In a game TBA, the Seminoles will enter Doak Campbell Stadium wearing the new black jerseys accompanied by the new garnet and black helmet as seen below.

We've been told the black jersey game will not be for one of the bigger games. So it will probably take place either in the Wake Forest, Virginia or Boston College games.

* As has been discussed, the coloring for the jersey numbers will change after this season. During home games, instead of gold numbers (which will be the case this year) they will go back to white with gold trim. For road games, the white jerseys will be changed to garnet numbers with gold trim (as was the case before this season).

A few notable player weights

J.J. Cosentino - 235 pounds
Frederick Jones - 305 pounds
Ryan Green - 204 pounds
E.J. Levenberry - over 240 (not fat at all)
Dalvin Cook - 205
Rick Leonard - 273
Jonathan Vickers - 219
Trey Marshall - 202
Demarcus Christmas - Well over 300 pounds
Mario Edwards - Over 300 pounds. Been told he tested out faster this year despite the added weight and is expected to play around 300 this season.

Bonus facility photos (Click on the photos to make them larger)

Hopefully you caught our blog entry last week that featured photos showing the progress of the coaches' offices. Here are a few more we received over the weekend. By the way, the media is getting a tour of some of the facilities on Wednesday so expect more photos coming soon.

Amazing tribute to Bobby Bowden in the wood paneling outside the coaches' offices

There is a huge emphasis on recognizing the FSU players that have moved on to the NFL

College Gameday mural on one of the walls in the lobby outside the coaches' offices

New Winston plaques inside the glass cases from the Moore Athletic Center

Notables

* After Jimbo Fisher made national headlines for putting peanuts in his Diet Coke at ACC Kickoff, he received a gift basket from Coke with several six-packs of Diet Coke and bags of peanuts.

Man Gene that was just an incredible update. Thanks so much and let the season begin. By the way, you have a beer waiting from me when I see you.

That tribute to Bobby is awesome.

I loathe the black jerseys and especially loathe wearing a different helmet, but it is what it is.

Good to hear about Nnadi and Christmas, I think we'll absolutely count on one of them this year.

Translation: We screwed this up. But it's cheaper for all the fans to invest in bigger plasma tv's, new contact prescriptions, and binoculars than it is to order more Nike jerseys.

Thank you and love all the updates.  IMO M. Jackson is going to be another X. Rhodes.  The kid will take a year to adapt to playing corner, but I think he is going to be a beast before he leaves!
7/29 8:37 PM | IP: Logged

Wow at Ryan Green weiging 204 and Mario Edwards Jr being faster than he was last year despite being over 300 pounds.
7/29 8:38 PM | IP: Logged
Dalvin Cook is already 205 lbs. This guy will end up being 215-220 before he leaves.

good catch

I agree with this too, this kid is going to be a good one. Another 3 star special by Jimbo (same goes for Arthur Williams).

It looks like they changed the face ask for the black helmet to gold. Is this true? No shot I wear a black shirt if the black out game is at noon or 3:30. Make it an 8pm game so I don't sweat my bag off out in the sun along with everyone else. Great updates though. Also why would anyone buy one of the jerseys this year if they are being changed next season. Makes zero sense. Another blunder lol

Definitely happy about this.

Noticed the garnet helmet face mask has changed colors? I liked it with garnet face ask - looks out of place with gold face ask.

Am I crazy that our garnet is pink/purple now!?

Dot, I love the example that has been set for these young men that report ready to "do the work". I especially enjoy that there are a few, very few, that somehow escape the hype necessary to be 4 & 5 stars, but can have the confidence that if they are willing to pay the price, they can "play for FSU"! We want to be elite, without being elitist! We are doing a pretty good job of doing that.

That is a huge change!
That means we retain our traditional color scheme rather than looking like Boston College! We'll just have to hold our nose for this season

Talent wins ball games.

The garnet/black helmet is the best looking helmet we have ever had, I like it better than the solid black we had a few years back. I have the gold, black and waiting on this new helmet. I saw the Bowden wall where his drawing is in the wood somehow, its pretty cool. Coach Fishers new office is unreal, 3 times bigger than the old one. The old office has a dividing wall in it now and is 2 assistant offices.

The good news is we're deep on the offensive line. If guys aren't working hard and staying in shape they'll be on the bench. Competition breeds success.

Wow, incoming freshman gonna be good this year. I love the young guns pushing for time.

Not sure how I feel about the black jersey. But got to keep up with the jones I guess. The boys earned it.

Love the new improvements to the football offices and facilities. That Bowden wall is sweet.
