Will I be seeing any of you at this?

I'd love to be there, but I am out of town.

Dr. Barron is a great guy and very approachable.  I hope you address the several issues we discuss here from time to time.  I am sure he has heard it all before, but his knowing that we are concerned helps, I would think.

Have fun!

I know Dr. Barron. He isn't going to make any newsworthy statements at a coffee chat. I am going more to represent our club and to connect with fellow Noles who are interested in academics.

I was there and it was a great event. First of all, Weinke spoke and got us all fired up about where the program is headed. Of course he gave credit to Bobby for all of his success as a football player, and said he is the greatest college coach of all time. He also talked about how EJ is a great QB, but an even better person.

Then Dr. Barron came out and talked about the success we have had in both academics and on the field. He talked about how in the Directors Cup we are sandwiched between UT and Ohio State and they are two of the richest schools out there. We basically do more with less.

Here's a quick list of things he said. We know how to spend the money that is donated, so keep giving(academics); the first Rhodes Scholarship in the state came from FSU, but the gates claim it because the student went to grad school at UF; is happy we moved up in US News rankings; we moved up even with cuts in higher education from the state; FSU routinely gets ranked as one of the best values in education; that we have to be prepared if FSU ever needs our help(like when the gates tried the flagship thing); that the film school in West Palm Beach is in limbo because of the Digital Domain bankruptcy; that it is very hard to get into FSU now; and a lot more that I can't remember.

It was a great event, and I enjoyed it immensely.

Thanks, Nole Daddy. Nothing groundbreaking, but I'm sure Barron did a great job and was entertaining.

Yes nothing groundbreaking but very entertaining.  He did talk about how it was so hard to keep ND coming as a partial member a secret, but they were able to do it.

Nole Daddy sums it up pretty well. A couple of other points:

--Barron said we are ranked 97th overall, but if you look at our overall resource rank, it is something like 212. People always say universities waste money, but FSU really does more with less than just about anyone in the country.
-- Indicated that there would be another attempt at a preeminence bill. He pretty much insinuated the governor was an idiot for vetoing it, with out directly saying so. Barron pointed out that no other state in the country charges the pretty much the exact same for tuition, regardless of public institution. He compared the ridiculousness of it to GM having to charge the same price for Chevy's and Cadillac's.
-- The university is working on their long-term marketing plan and should have it finalized within the next year or so.
-- FSU continues to attempt to be the most veteran-friendly campus in the country. Mentioned several things including that graduates get a special ribbon now when the walk.
-- The vote to add ND to the ACC occurred at 10 p.m. the night before the deal was announced to the public.
-- He mentioned that FSU students are doing much better in obtaining jobs and repaying their student loans than others. He said the average default rate among FSU alums is 3.3%, while the national average is about 8.5% and the state average is about 10.5%.
