I think it is ridiculous that the opinions of high school counselors factor into the rank of the Universities.  How would a counselor in Topeka know anything about comparing FSU with Clemson?

FSU makes the linked list of schools with a much lower high school counselor ranking than University Administrator ranking.  Other Florida schools are in the same boat, which makes you wonder if there is some other factor than actual quality of Institution that is affecting the rankings.  I say definitely yes.

Looking at that list,it would seem that high school guidance counselors prefer more teaching oriented colleges as opposed to large research universities.

Anecdotally, I have always heard that high school guidance counselors in this state were a big part of the perception problem when it comes to people thinking UF is leaps and bounds above FSU.

I've been told the same.

If this has even an element of truth we need to address this fast.

I can't believe that high school counselor have an effect on these rankings. Just another example of how useless these rankings are. With that said, many parents and prospective students look at them so Barron needs to keep working towards moving FSU up these rankings.

It almost doesn't matter if these rankings have merit.  The fact is perception counts and FSU needs to move up now.

Look at UF, for example - a close parallel school.  They have exploited the perception game for years - often at FSU's expense.  While FSU huddled in a stance of principled opposition the UF people moved UF ahead.

Further, I have noticed UF advertsing on all sorts of Internet media and websites.  We need to do this even better, as once again perception counts more than reality.

Play the game or be beaten by it even if you don't play.

I can affirm the guidance counselor bias based on my own personal experience.

I'm not sure how the issue can be addressed. I assume that FSU already sends them material every year, like other schools.

Among many other venues, the guidance counselor issue was a topic of frequent discussion of alumni attending those town hall sessions that were to be part of the preliminary planning for the capital campaign (believe those occurred in 2007 or maybe 2008). I have no idea whether there is a real bias or whether many alums just believe such a bias exists.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. We need to take the fight aggressively to UF. Those UF Online MBA billboards are a prime example to me. They put those up in Tallahassee, right next to the FSU campus. FSU would never be bold enough to put an FSU billboard on Archer Road or University in Gainesville.

One of the things I have talked about with Brick before is marketing FSU somewhat as "Florida's University." That could be one of our taglines and we could do other small things like have the football team carry the State of Florida flag out. This is method I have seen Virginia Tech use very effectively against UVA.

The data in the article seems to suggest that UF fares worse in guidance counselor's eyes than FSU.

UF's guidance counselor rank was 89 and FSU's was 131.  Both of those are considerably worse than the peer rank and also the actual overall rank. The discrepancy was worse for UF, and that is the reason they are higher on that list.

Is there any major that touches on the training of guidance counselors? Or are they just primarily comprised of teachers with masters degrees?

Yes it does.  But their US News ranking does not.  I am suggesting the US News ranking is more important.

there is a nice FSU MBA billboard in downtown Tampa at I-275 and Ahsley exit.

Glad to hear it!  We need about 50 more.  Three in Gainesville.

Get the word out to HS Counselors -
 ACC Academics > SEC Academics

As long as uf can point to the fact that their average gpa,sat etc is even 0.001 above FSU's, they will exploit that to the end.

It's a fact without any real-life meaning we all know but it sells to the general public and high school kids.

I wish FSU were able to somehow play that game better...
