Cool thread on USC message board. I'll borrow the idea for our forum. Who is the best football player to come from your HS? Any good stories about the player in his high school days?

Posted on 7/21 11:27 AM | IP: Logged

I would have to go with Sam Cowart from Madarin High in Jax.

Posted on 7/21 11:29 AM | IP: Logged

Wuerffel, E.G., then the Rooster.

Posted on 7/21 11:30 AM | IP: Logged

Dan Mowrey! Just kidding - right now the answer is probably Kevin Carter, unfortunately. But soon Antonio Cromartie will take over #1! Pat Watkins, Craphonso Thorpe, and Zach Pillar probably round out the top 5.

Lincoln Trojans rule!

Posted on 7/21 11:32 AM | IP: Logged

Reinard Wilson, Kendyl Pope, and Jerome Carter.

Posted on 7/21 11:33 AM | IP: Logged

Probably Jamie Germaine (not sure of the spelling) from Fort Myers High School. Of course, my favorite 2 are Leon Fowler (safety) and Robby Baker (center) because they were friends of mine in high school and donned the garnet and gold in college. Those were fun days.

Posted on 7/21 11:57 AM | IP: Logged

Clinton Portis

Posted on 7/21 11:59 AM | IP: Logged

Played for two schools so:
1)George Mira
2)Bobby Kemp

Posted on 7/21 12:03 PM | IP: Logged

None football wise, but played baseball with Kyle Davies. He's a starting pitcher for the Atlanta Braves now!

Posted on 7/21 12:11 PM | IP: Logged

Keith Rivers.

Posted on 7/21 12:11 PM | IP: Logged

gonoles02 i would say the same thing Sam cowart from mandarin high, but tony carter is still young. Go Mustangs class of 02.

Posted on 7/21 12:12 PM | IP: Logged

I'm from High Point, North Carolina. Not exactly a football hotbed. We've had a few pros, though. Ted Brown, of NC State fame and later the Minnesota Vikings. A guy named Jonny Evans, who was a quarterback and then played for the Bears - as a punter, I think. Finally, a defensive back named Junior Robinson, who played for the Patriots a number of years ago when he got killed in a car accident.

North Miami Senior High

John Browning, DE, West Virginia, KC Chiefs (currently playing)

Lawrence Wright, SS, UF (Thorpe award winner 96, and helped beat our ass in the national championship)

Marlin Barnes, LB, UM (Murdered in Coral Gables during sopohomore year)

Earl Little, FS, UM, Browns, Green Bay (played with Green Bay last year)

The first 3 guys all played on the same team while I was in High School We had a ridiculous defense...and the most pathetic offense you could ever imagine.

We also had Steve Carlton in baseball. I think he was pretty good or something.

Posted on 7/21 12:32 PM | IP: Logged

Derrick Gibson out of Miami Killian Senior High. Hopefully J.R. Bryant will start to shine this season. I remember two years ago there were 6 players from Killian on the N.C. State roster. Malcom Tatum also went to Killian but I wouldn't say he's anywhere near the best football player to come out of there.

Posted on 7/21 12:32 PM | IP: Logged

Antonio London, my small ass hometown has him, Steve Matthews, and Dewon Brazelton who was the third pick behind Mauer and Prior.

Posted on 7/21 12:33 PM | IP: Logged

Kevin Knox or Kenny Felder.

Tough to call.

We had Odell Haggins and Jason Odom as the top two probably.
I think Jason had a better NFL career, but Odell is a Nole, so it's got to be him.

Hopefully Alex B. launches himself into the conversation starting this season.

Posted on 7/21 1:15 PM | IP: Logged

Wolfson Wolfpack in Jax - Rod Owens. Derald Williams was a big time HS AA Running back in the late 70's, but was a huge bust at UF. Go Pack!!!

Posted on 7/21 1:16 PM | IP: Logged

Great thread... I love talking about guys I played with since I didn't pan out... haha

I played for two schools, Statesboro High (GA) and Booker T. Washington (Pensacola).

Statesboro High 1982-3
Cassius Osborne (WR) - I watched him run a 4.39 on the track one day and was truly amazed with all my "blistering" 4.92 speed. Cassius was recruited by FSU, but decided to play for Vince and the running game at UGA (his mistake). He got a tryout with the Steelers, but didn't make it. If he goes to FSU, Bobby would have helped with some nice numbers and a much better shot at the NFL.

Washington High 84-5
Mike Nettles (CB) - he went on to play at Memphis State and was drafted by the Seahawks in the 7th rd, but he didn't catch on. He went on to play for Orlando in one of those summer Pro leagues in the early 90's that didn't catch on. Emmitt, Pat Johnson, Lamar "Chili Dog" Williams played for Escambia, and Webbie Burnett played for Escambia or Pensacola High... I guess most of the talent was at our cross-town rivals???

In the Fall of 86 I went to FSU - and Derrick Brooks began his early career as a freshman at WHS.

Ah... the good ole days!!!

Guess - I included guys I played with... Derrick Brooks would be the BEST to Ever play the game at WHS!!!

Clevland Gary

Signed with UGA, transferred to UM.

Played in the NFL (Rams) for 5-6 yrs. You could tell when he was just a FR in HS he had "it".

I also went to Ft. Myers High! Jammi German was amazing in high school. Played pretty well at UM till he tore up his knee. Rod Gadsen was also there and went on to play DB at Syracuse for 4 years. If he would have lived up to his potential, Keith Drayton might have been the best ever. He was a beast on the DL and ended up playing at UGA for a year or so before fizzling out.

Posted on 7/21 1:31 PM | IP: Logged

Just a few miles down the road at North Fort Myers High, they've had some ones too. Deion Sanders, Jevon Kearse....and now Noel Devine.

Posted on 7/21 1:32 PM | IP: Logged

Jimmy Jordan, Wally Woodham, Kurt Unglaub, Darren Holliman, Clifford Charlton (UF), Tony Robinson (Tenn), Brad Culpepper (UF), Tamarick Vannover, Wyatt Sexton...

lots of good players from St Thomas but i probably have to go with Michael Irvin.

Posted on 7/21 1:42 PM | IP: Logged

I went to Bay High School in Panama City. We had kid named Mac Pittman who was UNBELIEVABLE at the RB. He tore through Defenses. His sophomore year our team made it to the State Finals and played against Peter Warrick. It was show of Pittman and Warrick. Pete's school won. Mac never made it, choose to run the streets instead.

Jared Moon, Kenny Kelly, Eric Kelly, were all big time. Down the street Jason Whitaker and Will Witherspoon played.

Posted on 7/21 1:43 PM | IP: Logged

Lots to list for me. I went to Lincoln. I was at Lincoln with Zach Pillar and Kevin Carter. Both have had awesome NFL careers. Obviously I didnt care for there college choices. Oh yea Mowrey was there with me too.

My brother was at Lincoln with Thorpe, Cromartie, and Boo Williams!

Jason Elam - Brookwood High School, Snellville, GA Denver Broncos

Hey! what about Sam Platt (FSU rb) or Jeff Rouzie (Bama AA before the car wreck)?

The great Hassan Jones

Posted on 7/21 2:20 PM | IP: Logged

Johnny Damon hit me so hard once that my left eye stopped working for 2 hours.... before he settled on baseball.

But I'd guess the best FOOTBALL player from DPHS in Orlando would be Ryan Moore. Pretty sad, actually.

John Carney -ND, San Diego, New Orleans
Craig Ericson - Miami, Tampa Bay, Indy, Miami
