A post-spring look at FSU football's scholarship roster
Florida State football's spring camp technically ends Monday evening with one final practice after Saturday's Garnet and Gold Spring Showcase.
And yet, even before spring practice ends, some attention must already be turned to the state of the Seminoles' scholarship roster.
Update: FSU entered spring with 88 scholarship players and the departure of veteran defensive end Derrick McLendon in the middle of spring camp as well as linebacker Brendan Gant, defensive tackle Antavious Woody, Stephen Dix Jr. and Zane Herring and defensive back Omarion Cooper dropped that number to 82.
NCAA regulations dictate that FSU must reduce its scholarship roster to 85 players or less by the start of preseason camp. As such, there will be at least a bit more attrition coming to the FSU football roster over the next few weeks.
The post-spring transfer portal window began Saturday and continues through April 30. Over that span, a few more FSU players may leave the roster — perhaps even enough to drop FSU below 85 scholarship players — and the Seminoles may add another few players through the portal as well.
Coach Mike Norvell said after FSU's Spring Showcase that exit interviews for the entire FSU roster would begin this week with their position coaches.
"I think it's always good to get an understanding of where guys are, the things that continue to be improved on, and be able to go from there. It's always great to get the feedback of the players' perspective and then just our perspective for them as well," Norvell said. "The day and age with the transfer portal and opportunities, I'm sure it will be interesting across the country. But I like where we are, and I like this group that we have. It will be good conversations for us to have as individuals and as a team."
