Florida State's Academic Progress Rate for football has improved dramatically over the last academic year, but it continues to rank as the lowest among Power 5 schools in terms of the important multi-year trends, according to data released Wednesday by the NCAA.
FSU's multi-year score (a rolling four-year score) of 941 for 2016-17 was two points higher than its 939 from one year earlier. That ranks last in the Power 5 for the second straight year.
But the Seminoles did make major strides over the last 12 months. After producing a one-year score of 918 in football for the 2015-16 year, they improved that to 966 this past year.
The highest possible APR score, which the NCAA has been using to track the academic progress of member institutions since 2004-'05, is a perfect 1,000.
The NCAA requires a minimum multi-year score of 930 before a program faces any penalties or sanctions.
Despite the improvement, the Seminoles' multi-year score is by far the worst among football teams in the ACC. The next two lowest scores in the conference are North Carolina and Virginia Tech at 960.
The next lowest scores among Power 5 football programs are Kansas at 945 and Arizona at 946.
There is additional reason for optimism for FSU's football going forward, thanks to changes being implemented by new head coach Willie Taggart. (See related story -- Taggart draws cheers for FSU Football's improvement in classroom)
