Charlie Ward sets his retirement date

It's hard to believe, but it's been over a decade since Charlie Ward played football at Florida State. Since those glory days, he's made quite a pro career for himself and is getting ready to enter his 12th season in the NBA. Over that time, Ward has averaged 6.3 points per game and played in 26 playoff games.

But the end is near, and Ward confessed for the first time, that there is a plan for life after pro basketball.
"I have two more years left on my contract," said Ward. "Once I finish those two, I'll be officially done. I'll be moving on to the next phase of my life."
The former FSU Heisman Trophy winner has always been closed off about his future plans, but now it seems like he has it all figured out. He reunited with former Knick coach Jeff Van Gundy last year in Houston, and ever since, has been having the time of his life. But he says he's never too far from the people that helped give him his start.
"It's flown by," said Ward. "I talk to Coach Hamilton and Coach Bowden periodically. I also have ties to Georgia now with Coach Richt there. I do keep up with FSU. I watch all the schools. I like football and basketball."
When Charlie does hang it up, he hopes to be involved in the game in some capacity. But he notes that it won't be anything too crazy. For example, don't look for him to become the 'Noles' next offensive coordinator.
"That's a big transition," joked Ward. "I'd go back and have input with the athletes, but as far as coaching there, I don't think so. I do know I'd like to be a mentor and help young kids make a transition. I'd like to help them become better athletes. But I have my own kids, maybe I'll coach one of them."
Ward spent Thursday night in St. Augustine, Florida, along with FSU assistant coaches Odell Haggins and Mark McHale. The goal was to raise money for the University and the event was very successful.
"It's always good to see old faces that you passed while you were in school," said Ward.
