"Derwin committed to Florida State," Iowa Western Community College coach Jim Morris said. "We talked about it yesterday and he told me that is what he wanted to do. We knew he was strongly considering them and he just kind of finalized it."
Kitchen had previously been recruited by Florida State in 2005 out of Jacksonville (FL) Raines, where he was a three time All-State selection and was named runner-up for Florida's "Mr. Basketball" after averaging 21 points and nine rebounds. In 2005, Kitchen instead opted for the Florida Gators.
After signing with Florida he encountered an academic roadblock which sent him the prep route, where he attended Florida Prep. After Florida Prep, Kitchen landed at St. John's but due to academic reasons he did not play and eventually transferred to IWCC.
Once at IWCC, the interest in Kitchen continued with such schools as Kansas, Kentucky, Miami, and UNC-Charlotte showing interest. The Seminoles' interest paid off, though, when Kitchen decided to pull the trigger and return to his home state to finish out his collegiate career.
"Florida State had been in with him a couple of times," Morris said. "I think a chance to go back home was a big reason. He also really likes the Atlantic Coast (Conference). It gives him a chance to be in a good conference. He also really likes Coach Hamilton."
Sitting out the spring semester at IWCC, Kitchen learned the Reivers' system through practice as a member of the squad.
"He is our starting point guard," Morris said. "I do move him over and play him at the two some also. I think (Florida State) wants him as a point guard. I think that is his best position. He really sees the floor well, makes great decisions in the open floor, and he has good size for a point guard."
Coming out of high school, Kitchen was considered by some to be a shooting guard or a combo guard but Morris said Kitchen has dedicated himself to becoming a great point guard. As the Reiver's starting point guard, Kitchen is averaging 12.2 points per game this year.
"He has developed," Morris said. "He handles the ball well and makes good decisions. He has another gear as far as when he is pushing the ball up the court or turns the corner on high-post picks, he can really get the ball to the basket. He needs to work on his shooting and improve that but he has three years left so he will definitely have time to develop that."
The former three-star will arrive at Florida State after the summer semester at Iowa Western Community College. Due to redshirting last spring at Iowa Western, he will have three years to play three.
Check back later today for comment from Kitchen on his commitment.
Talk about it on the Tribal Council or the Hoops Message Board.
