In the 14 years since he last played inside Doak Campbell Stadium, Greg Jones typically makes it back to Florida State once or twice a year to check out a game or practice.

His visit this week is unique because he's been able to mix business and pleasure.

Jones, who spent the bulk of his 10-year NFL career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, now works in scouting for that organization. He accepted that position last June and is in Tallahassee this week to work FSU's Pro Day event on Tuesday.

In that role, the former Seminole running back will get to evaluate another former FSU running back great, Dalvin Cook, and a slew of other players preparing for the NFL Draft.

"I don't get back as much as I'd like," Jones said. "But during the season, I usually try to come back and catch a game. And I usually try to come back during spring ball."

Since he was going to be in town anyway, Jones said he came a day early so he could check out the Seminoles' first spring scrimmage. He said he also plans to come back for the FSU spring game, during which he likely will share some words of wisdom with the team.

"It is fun coming back," said Jones, a bruising runner who led FSU in rushing as a sophomore, junior and senior. "It's fun to see where guys get started and see them the next year getting better and growing and growing. It also brings back memories at the same time."

During breaks in the action, Jones enjoyed chatting with defensive tackles coach Odell Haggins -- the lone assistant coach remaining from his playing days (2000-03) -- and other longtime staff members.

As he looked around Doak Campbell Stadium on Monday, Jones smiled as he remembered what it was like to carry the ball there in front of 80,000 fans. He also couldn't help but notice the Champions Club, the super-sized replay board and other improvements that have been made since he wore the garnet and gold.

"It's been a while since I've been down at this level (on the field)," Jones said. "It's changed a lot. They've got the new stuff in the end zone. It looks nice, though. But it does bring back memories.

"I try to tell the guys, 'Enjoy it while you can, 'cause time flies.'"
