Florida State freshman De'Andre Johnson, who was suspended last week following his suspected involvement in a nightclub altercation, has now been charged with misdemeanor battery, according to documents released Tuesday by Tallahassee police.
According to the probable cause affidavit, a female victim told police she was in line waiting to order a drink at the bar when a man later identified as Johnson began pushing her from behind. When she turned and raised her hand to defend herself, according to the report, Johnson grabbed her arm "and began pushing her."
The victim said she raised her knee toward Johnson's midsection to push him away and also tried to punch him with her left fist because he wouldn't let go of her right arm. Johnson then punched the woman in the left side of her face, police said.
According to the report, video obtained at the scene supports the woman's account of the events. Police also observed bruising under her left eye, swelling to her left cheek and upper lip and a small cut near the bridge of her nose.
The victim told police she wants to press charges in the case, and the probable cause was signed by state attorney Willie Meggs on Monday.
Johnson, a quarterback who was expected to be fourth on the depth chart this fall, was suspended indefinitely last week. It is not yet known whether the university is going to take further disciplinary action.
Johnson is a four-star prospect out of Jacksonville First Coast High School and was named Mr. Football in the state of Florida. He enrolled at FSU in January and was impressive during the spring game, completing 8 of 11 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns.
