A major college football program offering a young recruit a scholarship is nothing new these days. But when it involves a 300-pound 14-year old it is a bit out of the ordinary. But it happened at Florida State on Friday at the conclusion of the Jimbo Fisher Football Camp.
Tru Thompson from Griffin (Ga) stands 6-foot tall and weighs in at 300-pounds. But considering he wears size 18 shoes you can bet that he'll grow a few inches, and probably add a few more pounds, by the time he enrolls in college in 2019.
Considering his youth, Thompson is still in the early learning stages of his position. However, his amazing athleticism and strength caught everyone's attention at the camp. Turning in a 40-time of 5.1 seconds on Thursday also impressed onlookers.
Thompson, who says he grew up a fan of Florida State, was rewarded for all his talent and potential on Friday when FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher extended an offer. Naturally, the young prospect was quite excited about his first ever offer.
"Coach Fisher offered me a scholarship today and I'm thinking about it right now. I was like 'me, he's offering me.' It was very exciting. This is my first ever coming to a college camp," Thompson told Warchant.com. "Coach Fisher also talked about how athletic I was during the camp. It's a great school and a lot of success came out of here so I've always like them. I know Odell Haggins is also a great coach and one of the best defensive line coaches. Also, I want to major in business and they have a good program. So when I heard about that I said 'alright that's pretty good.'"
Haggins worked with him throughout the camp and just after a couple short days the young defender noticed the improvement in his technique.
"It was amazing," said Thompson of Haggins' coaching. "He taught me a lot of things I haven't done before. He taught me the proper stance and how to use my quickness more. He wanted me work on my half step because I'm still young and learning things. Coach Haggins liked how I got off the line and my athleticism, also how quick and strong I am on the line.
"I learned what I need to work on. Staying half a man, working on my stance and that's what I mainly have to work on so this three day really help me. I have a way better stance now. A lot of times Coach Haggins would slap my butt to let me know I wasn't doing it right so that had an impact for me."
The past couple days, and Friday's offer, will be a memorable for a prospect that won't be able to enroll in college for another four years.
