Notre Dame's trip to Florida State this weekend may not be the Game of the Century, but it's still going to be a tough ticket for fans.
According to data from SeatGeek.com, Florida State's top-five matchup against the Fighting Irish is the most valuable ticket for a Seminoles home game and one of the most valuable for the entire college football season. SeatGeek, a Rivals.com ticketing partner, is a ticket search engine that gathers information for fans in search of tickets on the secondary market. As of this past Thursday, FSU-Notre Dame was the 13th most in-demand game of the college football season and the second most valuable ticket for this weekend -- and still rising.
The average price for a ticket to the Notre Dame-FSU game was $209 last week, according to SeatGeek analyst Connor Gregoire. The only game with a higher average ticket price was Texas A&M's trip to Alabama, but that could flip by this week. The average price for the Notre Dame-FSU game rose from $196 to $227 over two days last week, while the average price of the Texas A&M-Alabama game fell in the same time period a week after the Crimson Tide lost at Ole Miss.
"It's definitely trending up," Gregoire said in a phone interview. "There's been more than a 10 percent increase in the last couple of days."
Ticket prices often fall 10-20 percent from Monday to Friday of game week, Gregoire said, but prices can continue to escalate in certain cases. With Florida State and Notre Dame remaining undefeated this weekend with wins over North Carolina and Syracuse, respectively, and ESPN's "College Gameday" visiting Tallahassee, interest continues to build.
Gregoire doesn't see demand for the game falling. With that in mind, he said fans looking for tickets on the secondary should act sooner rather than later.
"In this case, I'm less comfortable telling people to wait until the last minute," he said. "If you see a deal you're comfortable with, grab it."
In addition to being one of the country's biggest games this season, the Notre Dame matchup is on pace to be one of the toughest tickets at Doak Campbell Stadium in recent history. Since SeatGeek began collecting data in 2009, only the 2011 game against Oklahoma was a more valuable ticket on the secondary market. The two prices were close -- tickets for the Oklahoma game averaged $215.
Part of it is due to the high-profile showdown of two undefeated teams, but Notre Dame's fan base also plays a large role in ticket demand. Gregoire said it's normal for Notre Dame games on the road to drive prices up to 30 percent higher than average games, not unlike the Dallas Cowboys do in the NFL.
"Notre Dame is one of the few schools that travels pretty well no matter where you look," he said. "… (Notre Dame) even attracts fans who aren't alumni of the university."
With all that in mind, Gregoire said it would probably be a good idea for FSU fans to get their tickets sooner than later.
"I don't think you're going to end up wishing you'd waited until the last minute," Gregoire said.
