ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Highlight after Highlight hit Team Armour in Friday's Under Armour All-America Game. Team Highlight took control early thanks to a handful of big plays from FSU commits and never eased up on the way to a 46-6 win.
Team Highlight, featuring FSU commitments Deondre Francois, George Campbell, Abdul Bello, Da'Vante Phillips, Kai Locksley and Derwin James made short work of Team Armour. Team Highlight also included FSU targets Calvin Ridley, Byron Cowart, Iman Marshall and Terry Beckner Jr..
Francois went 4-4 passing for 103 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter that was set up after a 60-yard completion to Campbell streaking down the field. He fumbled in the red zone in the third quarter with the game well in hand and only played briefly after that, helping his offense run out the clock.
"I'm just a relaxed kind of guy," Francois said. "I don't like to get too rowdy … I'm just staying relaxed, keeping calm in the game helps me remember where to go with the ball and what to do with the ball."
Team Highlight's 40-point win was the biggest margin of victory in the eight-year history of the game.
"I think it was a fun game, coming out here and competing with a lot of kids who were very skilled," Phillips said.
Quarterback commit De'Andre Johnson got his chance to show what he could do for Team Armour, but it came after his team was already in a deep hole. Johnson was the third quarterback to play for Team Armour, entering the game with the score 24-0. He finished 4-9 passing for 55 yards and also rushed for 16 yards. Johnson drove Team Armour into the red zone early in the fourth quarter, but took back-to-back sacks from Cowart and Beckner Jr. and turned the ball over on downs.
Even when Team Armour finally got on the board, Team Highlight made them pay. The extra point was blocked and returned the length of the field by Team Highlight to make the score 29-6 in the second quarter.
Five-star running back commit Jacques Patrick had trouble finding a rhythm with limited carries against a powerful Team Highlight defensive line. He had four rushes for 13 yards against players like Cowart and Beckner Jr., who found ways around their blockers all day.
Team Highlight had no such problems on offense. They cruised in the second half as Armour continued to struggle to finish drives. Phillips caught a touchdown pass in the third quarter as players like Cowart and James kept Team Armour at bay.
Cornerback Kendall Sheffield, the only FSU target deciding on Friday, committed to Alabama during the game before the record crowd of 25,461.
Defensive tackle Daylon Mack earned MVP honors for Team Armour, while Cowart was named MVP for Team Highlight. He finished with four tackles and a sack and was a force all afternoon.
"It shows that I'm developing," Cowart said. "It shows that I'm maturing. It shows that I'm getting ready for the next level. I thought coming out here 'Dang, I'm going to be tired.' But I felt like hey, if I go hard in all these practices, the game will be easy. The game, I don't want to say it was easy, but it was easier than practice."
