Florida State finally had the lead. And in under 30 seconds, a blown coverage, a pass interference call and a last second, 54-yard field goal took it away in a 37-35 loss Saturday at Doak Campbell stadium.
UNC held the lead for the entire game until FSU quarterback Deondre Francois scored on a two-yard run for a 35-34 lead with 29 seconds left in the game. Tar Heels quarterback Mitch Trubisky threw a 23-yard pass to Mack Hollins to reach the UNC 48.
Trubisky looked for Ryan Switzer and instead of a catch, Switzer drew a pass interference call. The penalty put UNC on the FSU 37 and Tar Heels kicker Nick Weiler drilled the 54-yarder and sent the Seminoles to their second loss of the season.
FSU nearly pulled off another comeback yet was hampered by another slow start. A missed field goal attempt on the first series turned into UNC scoring on its first drive and taking a 7-0 lead.
The Tar Heels would open the game with three consecutive touchdowns for a 21-0 lead with 6:52 left in the second quarter. Cook's first touchdown run - a nine-yarder - came with 4:47 left in the second and brought the lead to 21-7.
It all got a little shaky in the third quarter. Sophomore running back Jacques Patrick broke off a touchdown run but fumbled as he was crossing the goal line. Patrick recovered and a Ricky Aguayo extra point made it 21-14 with 9:37 left
UNC wasted no time responding, scoring on its next drive and doubled the lead to 28-14 with 7:18 left in the frame. The Tar Heels nearly pushed it to 30-14 after they grabbed what appeared to be a safety.
Upon review, the officials deemed Francois was sacked at the FSU 2 and there was no safety.
