Impact Analysis: Samuel gives FSU an elite corner and a dynamic recruiter
Even though Fort Lauderdale-St. Thomas Aquinas cornerback Asante Samuel was expected to pick Florida State for awhile, that doesn't lessen the excitement in Tallahassee following Thursday's announcement that he has committed to the Seminoles.
"FSU is always home to me, and I've known that's where I want to be," the nation's No. 3-rated cornerback said. "They have a bunch of 'dogs' in that secondary, and that's how I play. So I'll fit in perfectly."
In landing Samuel, the 'Noles get a talented player and also another big name from the South Florida area -- one who could attract other recruits to join him.
How will Samuel fit in at FSU?
This is a situation where the rich get richer, as Florida State already has one of the most talented defensive backfields in the country.
The Seminoles return their top cornerback, Tarvarus McFadden, who led the nation in interceptions last year with eight. But McFadden will be a junior this fall and is likely to be a strong candidate to forgo his senior season with another big year. FSU also returns three exceptional sophomores in Kyle Meyers, Carlos Becker and Levonta Taylor.
Senior Malique Jackson will have graduated by the time Samuel arrives, but the Seminoles also have impressive freshman Stanford Samuels, who drew a lot of praise from head coach Jimbo Fisher this spring, and incoming signee Ontaria Wilson. That's just a look at the corners and doesn't include some of the top safeties on the roster.
