Projected Depth Chart (Offense) midway through spring practice
As we pass the midway point of spring practice, it's time to take a closer look at Florida State's 2018 depth chart.
FSU has not released an official depth chart this spring, and first-year head coach Willie Taggart has said it will be a fluid situation up through preseason camp. But there have been trends developing in practice that give us some insights into what the two-deep could look like this fall.
Before we start, here are some ground rules for this feature:
1) Players who have not yet arrived on campus are not included;
2) Players who are injured have been slotted where they are expected to land upon their return; they are denoted with an asterisk.
3) This is not a static document. All depth charts are fluid, and that is especially the case when a program is being led by a first-year coaching staff.
NOTE: The projected depth chart for defense will be posted on Thursday.
QUARTERBACK
First team | Second team | Third team |
---|---|---|
James Blackman |
Deondre Francois* |
Bailey Hockman |
With James Blackman and Deondre Francois both bringing a year of starting experience to the table, it's difficult to project one as the sure-fire starting quarterback over the other. But there are a couple of factors weighing in Blackman's favor right now -- No. 1 is his health and No. 2 is his leadership.
While Francois is still limited in spring drills by the patellar tendon injury that cut short his 2017 season, Blackman is fully immersing himself in Willie Taggart's offense. Blackman also has proven to be an effective leader, while Francois is still working to improve his reputation in that department.
Both quarterbacks have shown promise this spring -- and the battle will almost certainly continue into preseason camp -- but Blackman gets the nod for now.

RUNNING BACK
First team | Second team | Third team |
---|---|---|
Cam Akers |
Jacques Patrick |
Amir Rasul or Khalan Laborn |
After breaking FSU's freshman rushing record in 2017, there is little doubt that Cam Akers will be the Seminoles' starting tailback in 2018. Taggart has made it clear on numerous occasions that he loves everything about Akers, and the sophomore should flourish in Taggart's up-tempo offense.
Bruising senior Jacques Patrick will provide a great complement to Akers, and the Seminoles also will find ways to get the ball to junior Amir Rasul and redshirt freshmen Khalan Laborn and Zaquandre White.
