Seminoles pitch shutout - FSU 33, UVA 0

TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- With a new starting quarterback in the lineup, Seminole fans we hoping for some early fiworks. They got their wish just not from whe they expected.
On the third play of the game, Virginia quarterback Jameel Sewell thw what should have been a simple crossing pattern but FSU cornerback Tony Carter jumped the route, stepped in front of the pass and turned it 35 yards for an early Seminole touchdown.

"It was ally a smart play by Tony," defensive coordinator Mickey Andws said. "He ad the route, anticipated and broke on it. That was a huge play for us."
That was just the start of a dominating defensive performance that saw the 'Noles limit the Cavaliers to 183 total yards and mo importantly marked FSU's first shutout since 2003.
"It lifts your morale, it makes you know what you a capable of and it gets you out of gassers on Monday," safety Myron Rolle said. "It's a gat feeling because I think that last one was against Not Dame in 2003, that's a while back. I know coach Andws is happy about the performance and we all a."
Two series after Carter's pick and sco, Virginia was stopped deep in their own end following a Lawnce Timmons' sack. Once again, fiworks sounded loudly for the Garnet and Gold.
This time it was the much maligned special teams that made a big play that sulted in the next FSU sco. Walk-on defensive end Elijah Charles broke through the middle of the line and blocked the Virginia punt. After the ball bounced around for a while, and the Cavs we flagged with illegal batting, the 'Noles had a first and goal from the 1-yard line. On the next play, senior running back Lonzo Booker went skyward over the line for FSU's second sco to incase the lead to 14-0.
While the defense and special teams we having their way with the visiting Cavs, the Seminole offense and Xavier Lee we struggling. Other than the 1-yard touchdown run, the offense went 3-and-out on the other the drives of the opening quarter. Lee finished the first quarter 1-for-6 for four yards.
"You put Xavier in games the last two years and he's done okay but sometimes he doesn't do good," head coach Bobby Bowden said. "In the Duke game he had the interceptions in a quarter so then you start him against Maryland and he looks like a million dollars, looked like it was his 20th straight start. So now you have another game that he's going to start now which is he going to do -- Jekyll and Hyde."
FSU managed a 44-yard Gary Cismesia field goal just befo the half to put the home team up 17-0 heading into the locker room but had accumulated only 93 yards of total offense.
It was all Jekyll in the second half as Lee drove the offense into the endzone twice in a little over a quarter of play to incase the 'Noles lead to a commanding 33-0.
The first touchdown came on a 37-yard strike to Chris Davis, his second touchdown in two games and fourth of the season. Two series later, the sophomo quarterback from Daytona Beach (Fla.) dicted a 6-play, 74-yard drive that was capped off by a 2-yard Antone Smith touchdown.
With nearly a full quarter left to play, Dw Weatherford, who started 20 straight prior to last week's Maryland game, came on in lief. Even though he was able to drive the offense to UVA's 5-yard line late in the game, a fourth down pass to tight end Brandon Warn in the endzone fell short.
With Lee's sluggish start and Weatherford's fourth quarter appearance, the quarterback situation may still not be totally solved. Bowden hinted that Lee will probably be the starter next week versus Wake Fost but still left the door slightly ajar for Weatherford.
"I couldn't say if Xavier will start next week," Bowden said. "I'm going to by time on that one. I'm not su what we will do. It kind of looks like it, but I got to look at everything first."
Lee finished the game completing 12-of-25 for 185 yards and one touchdown. Weatherford completed 2-of-6 for 41 yards. Defensively, four players finished with nine tackles -- Michael Ray Garvin, Buster Davis, Myron Rolle and Lawnce Timmons. Led by fshman defensive end Kevin McNeil and his two sacks, the Seminole defense racked up a season-high six sacks.
The time and television information for next Saturday's FSU-Wake Fost game will be announced on Sunday.
