The Big Deal: Boselli takes first-team snaps at center; Eberle to return soon

Despite missing several recent practices due to headaches, redshirt sophomore center Alec Eberle should be able to return before Florida State's Labor Day opener against Ole Miss, head coach Jimbo Fisher told reporters Tuesday.

Eberle originally was thought to be suffering from concussion-like symptoms, but Fisher said team doctors no longer believe that's the case.

"What we found out was, it wasn't a concussion; it's more migraine-related," Fisher said. "So here in a day or two, they should have him regulated and back out there."

FSU has been without Eberle and his understudy, redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Corey Martinez ("tweaked" knee), for the last few days. That has led to true freshman Andrew Boselli taking first-team snaps at center.

Fisher raved about Boselli, a 6-foot-4, 303-pound Jacksonville product who is the son of former Jacksonville Jaguars star Tony Boselli. Fisher said the younger Boselli was with the first-team offense during the team's last scrimmage.

"Boselli is doing a heck of a job," Fisher said. "[His family ties have] rubbed off. You talk about intelligent, smart, he makes calls, physical, holds points, quick. He's going to be a heck of a football player now."

Junior offensive lineman Roderick Johnson, who has started at left tackle since he was a freshman, was also complimentary of Boselli.

"Like they say, 'Greatness has no age limit,'" Johnson said. "Coach Fisher and [Seminoles offensive line coach Rick Trickett] are going to put whoever they believe can do the job right. It doesn't matter if you're 18 years old or 21 years old, Boselli has come in as a freshman ... and is doing a phenomenal job."

The second verse: Defense learning Ole Miss' scheme, personnel

Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly is anything but a mystery. The Rebels' talented senior signal-caller was one of the nation's most prolific passers last season, throwing for about 310 yards per game.

His offensive line, however, is a bit different. Ole Miss has lost all five of its Sugar Bowl starters, including star Laremy Tunsil, who was a first-round pick of the Miami Dolphins.

Ole Miss' returning offensive linemen have a combined 36 starts, according to the Jackson Clarion-Ledger. The Rebels are tied for 107th nationally for fewest starts by an offensive line to start the 2016 season.

"What you've gotta do is watch different films," said senior defensive end DeMarcus Walker. "You know what this guy does. When you watch film, you can only watch one thing. So it's one game, but you watch it and you watch this guy. Next game, you go watch this guy."'

Although inexperienced, Walker said he's noticed a few things about Ole Miss' offensive line.

"They're very detailed, very smart," he said. "Pretty strong. They move very well."

Injury report

Because Tuesday's practice was completely closed to the media, our next injury report likely will come after Wednesday's practice.

They said it

"I want it. Coach needs to schedule everybody like that. I don't want no weeks off." -- Sophomore safety Derwin James on FSU's challenging 2016 schedule

“He’s flashed at me. I mean when he takes off, man he can move. What I like, he’s triggering downhill, reading, making good, disciplined reads inside. ... [He can] run guys down in space and track them. Really good cover skills, athletic – I mean, he’s just playing good football right now.” -- FSU coach Jimbo Fisher on junior linebacker Matthew Thomas, who was ineligible last season
