In his spring football debut a year ago, Jameis Winston's first pass went for a touchdown. On Saturday in the 2014 Garnet and Gold game, Winston found the going a little tougher.
With a younger, smaller receiving corps, Winston struggled to replicate his absurd accuracy numbers from the 2013 season, but was still plenty good enough - even while splitting time this spring between baseball and football. He completed 27 of his 56 passes for 396 yards with two touchdowns and led the Garnet to a 31-14 win.
Winston's primary target, , Rashad Greene spent most of the day blanketed by cornerback P.J. Williams, but still managed to haul in 11 catches for 127 yards and one touchdown. Jesus Wilson added another touchdown in the fourth quarter and had four catches for 101 yards.
Florida State's first-team defense gave Winston and FSU fits in the opening series, forcing three turnovers in the first quarter alone. Winston threw one pick to Jalen Ramsey and fumbled once, and Jesus Wilson also fumbled after a long reception.
Winston was still able to put together four chances in the red zone for the Garnet offense and score on three of them. Ro'Derrick Hoskins added another touchdown off a pick-six and added two sacks for the Garnet defense.
FSU didn't have an active scholarship tailback on the roster, but Freddie Stevenson carried the load admirably as a fullback. He rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown.
