Shouppe on Gilmartin: "He is a kid that came in from California.
He has the potential to be a two way guy for us with outstanding
offensive numbers and good stuff on the mound. Offensively, he
reminds me a lot of Jack Rye as he swings from the left side.
Gilmartin pitches in the upper 80s, and was used primarily as a
closer in high school and in travel ball. He's an outfielder with a
very strong arm."
1) You're from California, what made you decide to come to
Florida State? What other schools were in the running?
The decision to come all the way from California was pretty easy. I
attended a winter program down here a couple of years ago and fell
in love with the facilities here at FSU. The coaching staff was
another element that really impressed me, Coach Martin and his staff
have put together some pretty good ball players which have made to
the Major Leagues, which is where I want to end up.
Other schools that took an interest in me were UCLA, Cal Poly San
Luis Obispo, and a couple others.
2) This fall, what player (or
coach) has helped you the most in making the transition to the
collegiate level?
During the fall most of time was spent in the outfield, so I
would have to say pretty much all the returning guys from last year.
(Tyler Holt, Ruairi O'Connor, Ohmed Danesh, Mike McGee, Luke
Smierciak)
3) You're listed as pitcher/outfielder. What do you expect your
role to be on the team in 2009?
This year I see myself helping the team win as both a pitcher and an
outfielder, I was given an opportunity to do both this fall and I
would like to have the same opportunity during the season.
4) Any game day superstitions?
I would say I have three game day superstitions. First, I
always have to eat chicken before games. Second, putting on the
uniform it goes sliders, cup, left leg sanitaries (socks) and then stirrup,
then the right leg, undershirt, pants, and finally the jersey top.
Third would be to never step on the foul lines.
5) Has the college experience been what you expected?
The college experience has been what I expected to to be. I have an older
brother who is a shortstop at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC so he has kind
of given me an idea of what to expect this year.
