Florida State sophomore defensive end Josh Sweat will be out for up to two weeks after having surgery to repair a minor tear of the meniscus in his left knee, Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher said Thursday.
Sweat had surgery Thursday and will not be available for the noon Saturday kickoff against the University of South Florida at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. Sweat hurt his left knee a week ago at the end of practice.
He was trying to tackle sophomore running back Jacques Patrick and fell awkwardly on his knee. Sweat missed the team charter to Louisville on that evening but flew Friday morning and played in the 63-20 loss at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
"It's slight, a little piece of cartilage in there they just clipped out," Fisher said of the surgery. "Had a little piece and it was very clean and they did it today."

Fisher said Sweat's surgery was different than that of sophomore safety Derwin James.
James also had a meniscus tear he suffered in Week 2 in a 52-8 win over Charleston Southern. James was ruled out for five-to-seven weeks.
A former five-star prospect, Sweat suffered a severe left knee injury during his senior year of high school in 2014. He was able to come back from the injury and play as a freshman.
Fisher said Sweat will be replaced with a two-player rotation of junior Jacob Pugh and freshman Brian Burns in the hybrid "Buck" role. Fisher raved about Burns during fall camp, and the 6-foot-5 slender pass rusher has recorded two sacks in three games.
"He's really going to be a good player," Fisher said of Burns. "Just getting all the run stuff down and the pass. He's going to be a good player. He flashes and being in that environment last week was good for him. I think it's part of growing and he'll get even better and better."
