Following a lengthy delay that spanned over 13
hours and 41 minutes, Florida State (14-8, 4-4 ACC) evened its ACC record with a
6-2 victory over Maryland (11-13, 3-7 ACC) on Saturday morning in the resumption
of Friday night's series opener. With the win, the 22nd-ranked Seminoles
extended their win streak to four games while picking up their first road win of
the season.
Sean Gilmartin and Geoff Parker combined to shut down the Terrapins over nine
innings giving up a combined three hits as the Seminoles registered their 34th
straight victory over Maryland and 23rd win in a row in College Park.
Gilmartin moved to 5-1 on the year as the freshman southpaw worked five innings
on Friday night before the game was postponed due to rain. Gilmartin allowed
just two runs on two hits as he walked two and struck out six. It marked the
fifth straight start that Gilmartin has registered six or more strike outs.
Parker earned his first career save as he pitched the final four innings in
relief. The Dade City, Fla., native allowed just two base runners on a base hit
and a walk. Parker finished the game with four strikeouts throwing 50 pitches.
Florida State finished the game with 11 hits as four Seminoles recorded two hits
each. Tommy Oravetz tied a season-high with two hits, while Jack Posey, Stephen
Cardullo and Rafael Lopez notched two hits and an RBI a piece. With a base hit
in the first inning, Tyler Holt extended his hit streak to a career-long 12
games.
The Seminoles ran out to an early lead before steady rain became increasingly
worse bringing the game to a halt with FSU leading 5-2 in the bottom of the
sixth.
Florida State threatened in its first at-bat of the three-game set in College
Park registering consecutive base hits by Holt and Oravetz to lead off the game.
Holt singled back up the middle and moved to second on a balk charged to
Maryland starter Matt Fullerton (2-2). Oravetz followed with a frozen rope
single through the left side forcing Holt to initially retreat back to second.
Once the ball cleared the infield, Holt moved to third and headed for home, but
was thrown out at the plate to keep the game knotted at zero.
The Seminoles grabbed an early lead on the Terrapins with two runs in the
second. Posey laced a one-out double to left and moved to third as Fullerton was
charged with his second balk of the game. Cardullo then drew a hard earned walk
after getting down in the count at 0-2. With runners at the corners, Lopez hit
an RBI single back up the middle plating Posey for the first run of the game.
Right fielder Ruairi O'Connor drove in the second run of the inning on a
fielder's choice groundout back to the mound. Fullerton went to second in an
effort to turn the inning ending double play, but O'Connor beat out the relay
throw from second to give the Seminoles a 2-0 lead.
Oravetz picked up his second hit of the evening doubling to the gap in right
center to begin the third. The hit would end the night for Fullerton who left
the game after just two plus innings of work. Ben Jones came on out of the
bullpen and after getting Tapley swinging on strikes, issued back-to-back walks
to Jason Stidham and Mike McGee to load the bases. Posey stepped in and gave the
Seminoles a 3-0 lead sending a sacrifice fly to right as Oravetz scored just in
front of the throw from right fielder A.J. Casario.
For the second straight inning, FSU loaded the bases this time drawing three
straight walks off Jones all on two outs. The walks would come back to haunt the
Terps as Stidham drove a 3-2 pitch from the senior right hander to right center
plating Holt and Oravetz for a 5-0 Florida State lead.
After going hitless through the first three innings, the Terrapins got their
first hit of the game off the bat of David Poutier as the junior second baseman
left the yard for his first home run of the season. Maryland added one more run
as Tyler Bennett brought home Mike Murphy on a sac-fly to right to cut the
Seminole lead to 5-2. Murphy followed the home run by Poutier with a ground rule
double to left.
Florida State registered three straight singles off Sander Beck to start the
fifth loading the bases for the third inning in a row. But the Seminoles could
not add to their lead as the Terrapin reliever recorded a pair of strikeouts
sandwiched between a line out to center to keep the Seminole lead at three.
Following a 13 hour and 41 minute delay, the two teams resumed play at 11:00
a.m. on Saturday morning. Geoff Parker started on the mound in the bottom of the
sixth in the resumption of game one. The sophomore right hander went three up,
three down throwing just 10 pitches.
In the first at-bat for the Seminoles on Saturday morning, Cardullo greeted
Terrapin reliever Matt Quinn rudely hitting a line drive offering on a 3-1 pitch
over the fence in dead center for his third home run of the season. The blast
increased the Florida State lead to 6-2.
Oravetz was plunked on the toe to start the eighth, his eighth hit-by-pitch of
the season and 34th of his career moving him within three of Bryan Zech for
fourth all-time on the career list at Florida State.
Parker set down eight in a row before allowing two Terrapins on in the eighth on
a single by Will Greenberg and a walk to Poutier. But the Seminole reliever got
Murphy to ground out to second on a knubber off the bat for the final out of the
inning.
Friday's game featuring Florida State and Maryland was called in the bottom of
the sixth with the Seminoles leading 5-2 due to rain that continued to hit the
College Park area.
Game 2
Florida State (15-8, 5-4 ACC) tied a
season-high with three home runs on Saturday afternoon in game two as the
22nd-ranked Seminoles defeated Maryland (11-14, 3-8 ACC) 10-2 on a misty, cold,
cloudy day in College Park. The Seminoles won their fifth game in a row, while
extending their win streak over the Terrapins to 35 straight games. In the
process, FSU recorded its 24th consecutive victory on Maryland's home turf.
"I was just very pleased with the approach we took to the two games," said head
coach Mike Martin. "We got out here and really got after it and played like
Seminoles. It made us all very pleased to see us come out here and play like we
did."
The Seminoles posted 14 hits on Saturday while tying a season-high with three
home runs including two in the first two innings. James Ramsey had a perfect day
at the plate going 3-for-3 with a two singles and a home run. He would reach
base on all five plate appearances drawing a pair of walks in the win.
Stephen Cardullo picked up his third straight multi-hit game going 3-for-5 in
game two and has now hit in nine straight games. Parker Brunelle collected a
pair of hits in five at-bats while picking up an RBI and a run scored.
The run support was plenty for starter Brian Busch (1-1), who worked a
career-high eight innings in picking up his first collegiate win. The freshman
southpaw allowed just two runs on four hits as he walked two and struck out five
in his third start of the season.
"I was able to get a lot of first pitch strikes," added Busch. "My location
wasn't as good as I would have liked but they seemed to hit the ball right to
our fielders."
The eight innings turned in by Busch in game two tied Sean Gilmartin for the
longest outing by a Seminole starter this year. Gilmartin went eight innings in
a 4-1 victory over Boston College back on March 6.
"Brian had a good outing," said Martin. "He spotted the ball well and did what
he needed to do. When he got the lead, he went after hitters. It was a very
intelligent outing for him."
Florida State grabbed the early lead in game two and never looked back scoring
six runs in the first two innings.
Tapley gave the Seminoles a two-run lead on a first inning home run off Maryland
starter Scott Swinson (1-4). The sophomore third baseman hammered a 3-2 pitch
out of the park to deep center for his team leading sixth round tripper of the
season. Holt scored on the play after leading off the game with a walk.
"Tapley's home run in the first was certainly big for us," added Martin. "We had
some clutch hitting today and some quality at-bats and that's what we were
after."
FSU added four more runs in the second to take a commanding 6-0 advantage. In
making his third start of the season and first in left field, freshman James
Ramsey left the yard hitting a solo shot out to left for his second home run of
the season. Two batters later, Parker Brunelle doubled off the fence in center
and moved to third on a single by Tyler Holt as the sophomore center fielder
extended his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games. Brunelle came home on a
groundout by Tommy Orvatez. Tapley followed and just missed his second home run
in as many at bats, doubling off the fence in left center driving in Holt for
the fifth run of the game. Tapley scored two batters later on an RBI single
through the left side by Stephen Cardullo.
Busch kept the Terrapins at bay until the fourth when Mike Murphy scored the
first Maryland run of the game. The Terrapin third baseman led off the inning
with a single to right and scored three batters later on a throwing error by
Seminole first baseman Mike Meschke. Gerry Spessard sent a groundball to Meschke
at first and instead of taking the sure out at first for the second out of the
inning, threw wildly over to second base. On the next batter, Busch then made a
great defensive play on a bunt right back to the mound by Dan Benick to save a
run. The West Boca Raton, Fla., native got Tyler Bennett in a run down between
third and home with Tapley applying the tag for out number two. Busch kept the
Seminole lead at five as he got Mike Moss to fly out to center to end the
inning.
The Seminoles came right back with two more runs in the fifth to increase their
lead to 8-1. FSU used a little small ball to manufacture both runs after loading
the bases on a single by Cardullo and back-to-back walks by Ramsey and pinch
hitter Jack Posey. Brunelle stepped in and sent a beautiful bunt single towards
second to bring home Cardullo, while Holt brought home Ramsey on a sacrifice
bunt.
Posey gave the Seminoles a 10-1 advantage as he unloaded on his third home run
of the season in the seventh. The sophomore first baseman took a 3-2 pitch from
Ian Schwalenberg out over the fence in left center. Ramsey scored on the play
after leading off the inning with a single up the middle for his third hit of
the game.
Busch retired eight straight Maryland batters before giving up a walk to Benick
with one out in the seventh. The walk would cost Busch as Matthew Murakami hit a
two-out RBI single to left scoring Benick for the second Terrapin run of the
afternoon.
The freshman southpaw returned to the mound in the eighth and set down the
Terrapins in order on just nine pitches. Busch would end the game throwing a
season-high 95 pitches.
Tyler Everett put the finishing touches on game two as he pitched the ninth.
After giving up two consecutive singles to start the inning, Everett got Curtis
Lazar looking on strikes and Murakami to ground into a game ending double play.
Florida State and Maryland will face off in the final game of a three-game set
