Florida State has signed Jimbo Fisher to a new long-term deal that will keep the head coach under contract through 2022, the school announced on Tuesday in a press release.
Details of the contact were not released, but the eight-year deal is expected to make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the game, according to the press release. Warchant previously reported that the deal would be worth at least $5 million annually, making Fisher one of the five highest-paid coaches in college football.
Warchant.com was the first to report that Fisher and the school were discussing a new long-term contract. Fisher signed a new deal before Florida State's national championship win at the end of last season, but earned a new contract as he led the Seminoles to 29 straight wins, a third-straight ACC Championship and a berth in the inaugural college football playoff. The new contract is also longer than Fisher's last deal, which ran five years.
"I am pleased that we have been able to secure Coach Fisher as our head coach for the long term," FSU athletics directory Stan Wilcox said in the release. "The commitment we are making to him is a reflection of the outstanding job he has done in leading our program to its current level of excellence. While we are delighted with the undefeated season this year and our upcoming appearance in the inaugural College Football Playoff, we began working on this new contract before the success of this past season was in full view. It is a great day for Florida State."
Fisher's contract signed last season paid him an average of just over $4 million for five years, but was heavily back-loaded. He was due to make $3.6 million this season before bonuses, making him the 14th highest paid coach in the country, according to USA Today.
"I share Stan's (Wilcox) enthusiasm and confidence in Coach Fisher as the leader of our football program," FSU president John Thrasher said in the release. "The success of our athletics programs provides valuable exposure for the outstanding teaching and research going on daily at the University, as well as to attract top faculty and students. Coach Fisher has done an outstanding job during his tenure as our head football coach and I am pleased that he will remain our coach into the foreseeable future."
Fisher is 58-10 in five years as Florida State's head coach. He led the Seminoles to their third national championship last year and has the team aiming back-to-back titles as the College Football Playoff begins on Jan. 1 against Oregon. He's 34-6 against ACC opponents and has gone a combined 9-1 against rivals Florida and Miami.
He's also proven to be one of the nation's strongest recruiters. The Seminoles 2015 class is currently ranked second nationally, and has ranked in the top 10 in each year since Fisher became head coach.
"I am honored to be the head coach at Florida State University, which I've said many times before," Fisher said in the release. "I appreciate that FSU believes in what we are doing and supports our goal of maintaining one of the best programs in the country. It is a privilege to coach the young men in our program. It is truly a family.
"Florida State is a very special place. I appreciate the support of the administration in accomplishing some great things. We have improved in a number of areas over the years, and the commitment to providing the very best in academics, facilities and maturation and growth opportunities for our young men has been key to our success. I look forward to continuing to build on what we are establishing."
Details about the contract will be released when the document becomes available.
