Florida State landed a huge commitment this summer when the No. 1 JUCO defensive tackle D.J. Jones jumped on board. On Thursday, the 'Noles continued rhe momentum with another big pickup when Thomas Dale (Chester, Va.) four-star defensive tackle Darvin Taylor II announced at his high school press conference at 1:30 p.m. he's heading to Florida State. He picked FSU over Maryland, N.C. State and Virginia Tech.
Rivals250 defensive tackle Darvin Taylor wanted to make sure his birthday was special. He decided to make his college choice on his big day. It was widely considered the Florida State was his favorite team after visiting the campus in February. Today, Taylor announced is a Seminole.
It's the second straight year the 'Noles landed a top prospect from Virginia. Last year, it was the No. 5-rated player in the state, defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi and this year, it's the No. 10 prospect, Darvin Taylor.
The 6-foot-2, 310-pound Rivals250 prospect had high interest in the 'Noles, but his return visit to Tallahassee in February was all he needed. That visit seemed to really set the tone. He fell in love with everything on that visit.
"I was down here last July with my parents. This visit was about experiencing everything all over again," said Taylor after FSU's junior day.
Taylor wasn't the only one who thought highly of the Seminoles. His father was decked out in Florida State National Championship attire.
His main recruiter and future position coach Odell Haggins certainly made a high impact on the younger Taylor. He admitted their relationship was very personal and that certainly helped seal.
"He's like another dad to me. My dad tells me what I need to hear, not what I want to hear and that's what coach Haggins is," Taylor explained after his February visit. "He told if I were to come to Florida State, work hard all the time and to have a non-stop motor. Coach Haggins is very straight forward, detailed about using my hands better. I do really like Coach Odell."
Taylor is the 20th commitment for Florida State's 2015 class. He is the No. 13 rated defensive tackle in the country and No. 182 player nationally.
