One recruit that has been on a steady climb up the rankings all year is South Carolina's Lawrence Timmons. A virtual unknown last spring, the 6-foot-3, 225-pound linebacker is now ranked as the No. 4 outside linebacker in the country by Rivals.com. He also has over 30 scholarship offers to his credit, and is a Rivals100 member.
Recently Timmons hinted that he wanted to play his college ball in Florida, which would favor two teams on his visit list - Florida and Florida State. On Tuesday, the four-star linebacker told Warchant.com that the Seminoles had pulled ahead and were his leader.
"I like that I'm at a position where I can play early, there's a chance at a national championship, and they have good coaches," Timmons said of Florida State. "They have the winningest coach in the nation. It's just a good place."
Next up on his visit docket is a trip to Florida State the weekend of January 9th. If all goes well, he just might pull the trigger during the visit.
"If it's alright I might go ahead and commit," Timmons said. "I want to talk to the players that are there, and some of the ones that have graduated and see how it really is at Florida State. If everything goes right I'll commit."
A couple current players Timmons expects to chat with during his visit are linebackers Ernie Sims and Michael Boulware.
After FSU, Timmons is slated to trip to Florida (1/16), Tennessee (1/24) and Georgia (1/30). He had previously scheduled Maryland for his final visit but recently replaced the Terps with the Bulldogs.
The fast rising prospect showed off his talents in the annual North Carolina-South Carolina Shrine Bowl last Saturday. Although his South Carolina team lost the game, he impressed onlookers with his speed and tackling ability and led his squad in tackles with nine.
Timmons finished his senior season with 150 tackles and two sacks.
