Seffner Armwood -- WR Warren Thompson, LB James Miller
It's no secret that Armwood High School in Seffner, Fla., has been a barren wasteland for Florida State when it comes to reeling in top recruits. The Seminoles have gotten close with several top recruits, but they always seem to come away empty in the end.
That said, things are trending pretty well that Florida State could end that drought with Rivals100 WR Warren Thompson, who is very high on the 'Noles. At the most recent stop of our Spring Recruiting Tour, we checked in with Thompson and some of Armwood's other top talent.
According to the Rivals rankings, Thompson is considered the ninth best receiver in the country, the No. 46 overall recruit and the 15th best player in the state of Florida. But as Thompson will attest, he's not a finished product by any means. That is evident in how he has approached the Hawks' spring drills.
"Spring is making you complete, blocking, running routes and being physical -- being a complete wide receiver," Thompson said. "I improved my body control a lot better this year. A lot of that was simply focus from me, so that's something I wanted to really highlight."
Thompson added that he's worked a lot this offseason on his footwork and using his size as more of a weapon. He currently carries 195 pounds on his 6-foot, 5-inch frame, but he's working to bulk up to about 205.
Armwood head coach Sean Callahan said Thompson has improved his skills and his work ethic.
"He's a different guy," Callahan said. "He's better at 11-on-11 than probably the 7-on-7. We are expecting big things from him for sure. I think his amount of focus improved a lot with his body control in catching the ball. ... Want to see him get a little faster."
Although it doesn't always transition to success in tackle football, Thompson believes the work he's done in 7-on-7 tournaments has paid off in many ways.
"It helps it a lot. With Armwood, we like to spread things out and be real physical," the four-star receiver said. "So this helps a lot in knowing that when my chance to make a play is there, I'll be ready to deliver."
With so many 7-on-7 tournaments and spring football at Armwood, Thompson hasn't had much of a chance to focus on recruiting. In fact, his last college visit was to Florida State earlier this spring -- and it's clear the Seminoles are still on his mind,
"I'm visiting there (FSU) right after spring ball is over," he said. "I'm also going to visit Oregon, North Carolina, Florida, and there are a couple others like Ole Miss and Tennessee. I'm looking forward to it. But yes, I'm pretty excited to be around Coach [Lawrence] Dawsey and FSU. Love it there."
Thompson, who has said FSU was his dream school, likes Florida State for several reasons. One of the main ones is he likes head coach Jimbo Fisher's offense and believes he could flourish in it.
