It’s time to look ahead to the upcoming season by breaking down the Warchant Top 40 -- a list of the 40 players we expect to have the biggest impact for the Florida State football team. (Note: This is not necessarily the 40 most talented players, but the players we believe will have the opportunity and capability to make the biggest impact this season.)
The list, which was compiled by Gene Williams and Ira Schoffel of Warchant.com, and Jeff Cameron of ESPN Radio Tallahassee, will be revealed in segments. Up next will be players 6-10.
Earlier installments: Players 40-31 | Players 30-21 |
Player No. 20: Sophomore Defensive Back Kyle Meyers
Although he will have plenty of competition for the job, Meyers likely will be the leading candidate for the starting cornerback position vacated by Marquez White's graduation. As a freshman in 2016, Meyers played in all 13 games and finished the season with 16 tackles. Most of his playing time came on special teams and as an extra defensive back in "nickel" and "dime" packages.
Note: Meyers wasn't the highest-rated DB in FSU's 2016 signing class, but he quickly earned the trust and respect of his coaches and teammates. He will be challenged for the starting job by fellow '16 signee Carlos Becker and others.
Voting Recap: No. 19 by Ira; No. 24 by Jeff; No. 20 by Gene.
Player No. 19: Sophomore Wide Receiver Keith Gavin
With the Orange Bowl hanging in the balance, Gavin gave Florida State fans a taste of his potential with a dramatic, 66-yard kickoff return against Michigan. Up until that point, Gavin had yet to record any offensive statistics during his appearances in eight games. Despite that lack of production as a freshman, FSU's coaches believe the 6-foot-3, 225-pounder could be a breakout performer in 2017. He is expected to be the Seminoles' No. 3 receiver behind juniors Nyqwan Murray and Auden Tate.
Note: Even though he has great size, Gavin is said to be one of Florida State's fastest wide receivers.
Voting Recap: No. 18 by Ira; No. 19 by Jeff; No. 22 by Gene.
