A new day for FSU football: Players adjust to Norvell's practice, pace

James Blackman didn't hesitate when he was asked about the difference between the Florida State football team's first spring practice of 2020 and the ones he had become accustomed to the last two years.

"There was more emphasis on the finish of plays," the Seminoles' junior quarterback said. "More detail in plays. More structure when you see us on the sideline. Keeping it like a real game-time atmosphere. So, more structure, more detail, more focus."

That was evident for all two hours Saturday morning.

New head coach Mike Norvell's first official practice with the Seminoles had a lot of instruction, a lot of action, a lot of moving, a lot of competing and a lot of energy.

What it did not have was a lot of standing around.

The head coach never stopped moving from the first whistle to the last, walking (sometimes jogging or running) from drill to drill all over both practice fields. The pace during drills and between them was unlike anything the Florida State players had experienced.

"You can tell there's not many people standing around in one spot for real long," Norvell said. "We're going to keep guys moving. I tell these players I'm not going to waste their time with one minute. So we stay active and we move fast.

"And over time that's going to build great confidence in how we operate and what we're doing. When you get to Game Day, we want everything to be slow for these guys."

Norvell said the coaches and team managers had done a walk-through of the first practice multiple times before Saturday. Even still, he said, there were some things from an operational standpoint that need to get ironed out.

"Just in our efficiency of movement," he said. "But I thought our players did a nice job."

The energy never seemed to wane. Especially not from the head coach.
