DeCalon Brooks committed to FSU on Thursday night

While many think it's an easy decision to attend the same school as your father, that's not always the case. But Tampa Gaither (Fla.) LB/S DeCalon Brooks is doing just that, announcing on Thursday that he has chosen FSU over Illinois and South Florida.

Brooks, who is the son of FSU legend Derrick Brooks, becomes the 13th commitment in the 2017 class.

Brooks made it clear early on that he loved the Seminoles, but he also added that FSU wasn't a lock by any stretch.

For one, Brooks had a great relationship with the Illinois staff, and even the South Florida staff. However, in the end, his love for the Seminoles won him over.

He also was excited about the way he would be used in Florida State's defense.

"After thinking, praying about it ... it was right to make this decision in committing to FSU," Brooks said. "Feel like I really know the place in being around there my whole life. Thing is, they see me as DeCalon Brooks, and not Derrick Brooks' son."

What position Brooks will play at the next level is still in question. Some project him as a safety, while others see him as a linebacker.

"They told me I'm going to be more of a hybrid in being that third-down 'backer, and the other times playing strong safety or outside linebacker," Brooks said.
