Some commitments in college basketball recruiting are years in the making, and that certainly was the case with FSU's landing of a commitment Monday from five-star forward Jonathan Isaac of IMG Academy in Bradenton.
In an interview with Warchant.com, Isaac explained that FSU coach Leonard Hamilton and his staff have been recruiting him since he was in the eighth grade. He said that long-term relationship and trust was a major reason he selected the Seminoles over many of the nation's top programs.
"FSU has been recruiting me for a long time," Isaac said. "They told me I had a spot even when I wasn't ranked and when I wasn't that big. So I appreciated that."
Isaac, who is FSU's third commitment for the 2016 class, is one of the highest-rated recruits in program history. Rivals currently lists him as the nation's No. 13 player.
The 6-9, 190-pound small forward said he visited Tallahassee for a football game and fell in love with the campus. He was so impressed that he decided not to visit any other schools.
"I just loved the coaching staff and the people," Isaac said. "I was on campus for a little bit, and I got to see the atmosphere and the culture of the place."
During his time in Tallahassee, Isaac said he was very interested in hearing what the Seminoles' current players think about the program. And he said they only solidified his belief that FSU should be his future home.
"They just talked so highly of Coach Ham and the staff," Isaac said, adding that he speaks daily with assistant coach Dennis Gates.
Although he has the size to play with his back to the basket, Isaac said he prefers to play small forward, and Hamilton believes that will be his best fit as well.
"They're gonna play me at the three, which is exactly what I wanted to play," Isaac said. "I can be a mismatch problem because I'm so tall and long."
Isaac said he is already friends with fellow 2016 commits Trent Forrest and C.J. Walker. He said he and Forrest talk frequently about the Seminoles' bright future, with an impressive 2016 signing class coming on the heels of a stellar 2015 class. That '15 group includes five-star Dwayne Bacon and four-stars Terance Mann and Malik Beasley.
"I like to work hard and just get after it," Isaac said. "Trent likes defense as well, so I think we're going to come in with the right mindset. Defense is first, and I think offense will take care of itself."
Now that he has committed, Isaac said he plans to help the Seminoles recruit other elite prospects, including his friend Udoka Azubuike of Jacksonville. Azubuike, a 6-9, 260-pound center, is rated No. 26 nationally by Rivals.
