Another missed field goal
Advertisement
Since 1991 this series has come down to a field goal four times (1991, 1992, 2000, 2000). Prior to missing the 43-yard attempt with one second left on the clock, Xavier Beitia was successful from 45 and 43 yards out. On the decisive play, the snap from Brian Sawyer was low and holder Chance Gwaltney had a difficult time getting the ball in place for the kick.
"The snap was a little low," said Gwaltney. "There's a flow in kicking, the snap and the hold and everything. If you have good flow you will knock the ball through but it just wasn't there."
No Moore
Sophomore defensive end Eric Moore was not at Saturday's game after suffering from appendicitis symptoms Friday night. He was taken to Doctor's Memorial Hospital in the morning and had his appendix removed. If all goes well he should be released on Sunday.
Boulware gets a pick
Junior linebacker Michael Boulware recorded his fourth career interception and first of the year in Saturday's second quarter. Boulware, who led the team with three interceptions in 2001, last recorded a pick in the third quarter of last season's Florida game. After safety Kyler Hall picked off a Ken Dorsey pass in the third quarter, his first of the season, FSU's defense is up to 11 interceptions on the 2002 season.
Career day for Jones
Greg Jones had a career-high 31 carries for a career-high 189 yards. The junior tailback now has five 100-yard games this season and nine for his career. His previous high was 173 vs. Virginia on August 31st. His previous career-high in carries was 23 vs. Georgia Tech last year. The last time an FSU back rushed for 30 or more times was Travis Minor (34) vs. Texas A&M in 1999.
One-point Loss...again
With Saturday's 28-27 loss, Florida State has lost all seven games in this series that have been decided by one-point. Bobby Bowden has never defeated Miami by less than 10 points.
The last time...
At halftime FSU held the edge over Miami by 17-14. The last time FSU led at halftime in this series was in the 1998 season. The Seminoles held a 14-7 lead at the break and went on to win 26-14 in the Orange Bowl. Since then, it was a 21-21 tie at the half in 1999 and Miami led 17-0 at the half in 2000 and 21-13 at the half in 2001. This was also the first time since the Hurricanes trailed at the half since the loss to Washington on September 9, 2000 (20-3 at the half).
