FSU standout Asante Samuel Jr. declares for NFL Draft

The Florida State defense took yet another hit on Sunday evening as starting cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. announced he has decided to forego the final games of the 2020 season and prepare for the NFL Draft.

Samuel, who is considered a potential first-round draft pick, leads the Seminoles in interceptions (three), pass breakups (six) and passes defended (nine). The former five-star recruit had played in all of the Seminoles’ eight games this season before his Sunday announcement.

He joins fellow starting defenders Marvin Wilson and Cory Durden as players who will no longer participate for a Florida State defense that is ranked near the bottom in the nation in a number of statistical categories.

What that season might actually consist of remains to be seen. The Seminoles have had two straight games postponed because of COVID-19 issues, and their game next Saturday at Duke is in doubt as of now. Florida State athletics director David Coburn said in a release on Saturday that FSU only had 44 scholarship players available because of quarantining and contact tracing.

So, it’s not yet known how many games Florida State is going to play the rest of this season anyway. But what is known is the Seminoles won’t have their best defender on the field if and when another game is played.
