Florida State's efforts to keep Charles Kelly as defensive coordinator came with a hefty price tag.
The Seminoles have rewarded Kelly, their third-year coordinator, with a new five-year contract that will increase by $250,000 this year and escalate over each of the next three seasons.
Kelly's previous deal paid him $583,000 per year, and the new one will move from $833,000 this year to $858,000 the next and then $883,000 in 2018-19; he will stay at that salary during the final three years of the deal.
Those numbers place Kelly among the 15 highest-paid assistant coaches nationally, according to the most recent USA Today database.
Kelly was pursued by Auburn and possibly other schools after FSU's defense delivered an impressive string of performances in 2015. His new deal actually went into effect in February of this year and will run through February 2021.
The terms of new contracts for Kelly, FSU's other eight assistant coaches and Athletics Director Stan Wilcox were released by the university Friday, in response to a public records request.
Wilcox also will receive a large bump in pay as part of his previously announced contract extension, which will run through July 1, 2020. After making $510,000 in base salary during his first three years at the school, Wilcox now will earn $757,985 annually.
