FSU Baseball Insider: Wells' incredible week; Cobi at the plate; and more

In the storied history of Florida State baseball, it could be argued no other Seminole has had a week like the one Steven Wells just enjoyed.

Over the course of five games -- all wins -- the senior recorded 12 consecutive hits and reached base on 20 straight official plate appearances. All told, in the two victories over Stetson and three at Boston College, he had 14 hits, two home runs, two doubles, 11 runs scored and seven RBIs.

He reached base safely 22 of 24 times.

Even for one of FSU's all-time greats, a week like this would have been a stunning achievement. For a senior who has never been more than a part-time player, it was an out-of-body experience.

Wells' batting average rose from .195 when the week started to the .298 mark right now. He now has the second-highest average on the team.

"It was unbelievable," FSU assistant coach Mike Martin Jr., said on Sunday night after flying back from Boston College. "I was like, 'They can't get you out. And I coached Brian Cox, who has the all-time consecutive hit record (at Florida State with 10 hits in 10 plate appearances). That was impressive.

"But what Steven did was amazing. Everybody was into it. It was special."

So how did Wells' streak eventually end?

"Hit a bullet right at the shortstop," Martin Jr., said.

Cobi at the bat

Cobi Johnson was recruited to Florida State as a pitcher, and that's where he's been used during his first three years on campus (when he's been healthy).

Then in last Wednesday's game against Stetson, the junior got his first at-bat since 2015. He launched a three-run homer to the bullpen.
