SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It finally happened, about 1,000 miles away from Doak Campbell Stadium, but that didn't diminish the Florida State Seminoles' appreciation of the moment.

On a 41-yard carry in the first quarter of Saturday's game at Syracuse, junior tailback Dalvin Cook broke Warrick Dunn's FSU career rushing record of 3,959 yards. Cook came into the game needing just 19 yards for the mark after rumbling for 108 yards last week against Boston College.

Cook likely could have broken the record with a few more carries, but FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher decided to sit him in the fourth quarter with a 35-0 lead.

Cook, who also shattered Dunn's single-season rushing record last season, owns the career mark after just three years of college football. Dunn posted his mark in four seasons.

While there has been debate about whether Cook or Dunn will go down as the better college running back, Cook said recently that he was honored to be in the conversation.

“I always look at Florida State history and look at some of the guys that came through this program,” Cook said before the Boston College game. “And we had some great running backs that came through the program, and obviously Warrick’s at the top of the list. To be mentioned with him, period … for my name just to be next to his name or being mentioned in the same sentence, it’s overwhelming.”
