After an opening day win, the Seminoles took Game 2 against James Madison 5-1 to earn the first series win of the Link Jarrett era at Florida State.
Whereas Friday was an offensive explosion on both sides, Saturday started off as a defensive slugfest as both teams flew through the first three innings.
After a rocky start to the first inning, RHP Jackson Baumeister struck out four batters over the next three innings to settle in to the ballgame.
"He's an intense competitor," coach Link Jarrett said. "I'm still getting used to knowing these guys in this setting. This is the first time I've seen him really compete against another team. I thought he did well. He is still figuring out that curveball and slider combo. He is going to keep getting better and better. He needed to go out there and have that kind of outing."
Florida State took the lead in the third inning as Nander De Sedas scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of DeAmez Ross. The RBI gives Ross four to start the opening weekend.
The Dukes tied the game in the fifth as RHP Connor Whittaker came on in relief of Baumeister with runners in scoring position. An error at the plate by Colton Vincent allowed the run to score, making Baumeister's only run allowed on the day unearned.
FSU stormed back to take the lead with a three-run sixth inning that started off with a home-run by Vincent, the first of his career. The Seminoles' first home run of the season came off the bat of its catcher who had never hit one prior in his collegiate career.
"I was in the cage in the fall and he was hitting left-handed and asked him what he was doing," Jarrett said. "And he said, 'Coach I used to do that and I got hurt and never got back into it.' I said, 'Well, that looks pretty good to me. Why don't you try it?' So he kept doing it and here we are today and he had the hit up the middle that got us going and the home run that made it 2-1."
Jaime Ferrer followed with a single up the middle of the infield that scored both Ross and Cam Smith. Ferrer's first hit of the season came with two RBIs attached to it.
"Jaime works so dang hard," Jarrett said. "He is so tough up there. He needed that and we needed that because the game was still in the balance and it was a good two-strike at-bat."
James Madison threatened to climb back into the game but the door was shut by Whittaker, who got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth inning.
The Seminoles extended the lead in the eighth on an RBI single by Jordan Carrion, his third of the weekend.
Whittaker (1-0) pitched the final five innings, relinquishing five hits and no runs allowed.
