It's never too early to land a commitment from a talented prospect, and the Florida State Seminoles got a big one when 2019 defensive end Michael Morris informed Warchant.com on Saturday that he has committed to Florida State.
Morris, a West Palm Beach-Cardinal Newman standout whose father, Mike Morris, played for the 'Noles in the late '80s, knew where he wanted to go from the start.
"I picked FSU because I wanted to follow my Dad's footsteps," Michael Morris said. "But I also wanted to go there because I felt like home here. I have visited like three times a year. Every time I'm here, it's about how I'm doing personally or how are you doing in school. It wasn't about if I'm coming here. They are worried about me as a person."
Morris becomes the first commitment for FSU's 2019 class, and he doesn't take that lightly. He said he relishes the honor of being the bellcow commitment for that class.
"It's an honor," said Morris, who is in town for the Seminoles' Junior Day. "I'm very thankful [for] what God has done for me, and I'm going to put it to good use in helping the class."
The sack machine out of South Florida is certainly not your typical high school freshman. The 6-foot-5, 240-pounder even joked that some players he met on campus Friday thought he looked like a current player on the team at FSU.
"I've always been tall," Morris said. "I've just starting shooting up. My seventh-grade year, I went from 5-foot-10 to 6-foot-2 in like one summer."
As a freshman at Cardinal Newman, Morris racked up 47 solo tackles and 55 tackles overall. He also finished with a team-high 13 sacks and was named first-team all county and second-team all-state (Class 4A).
"My secret in getting so many sacks was my footwork, and my spin move," Morris said. "I just kept utilizing my speed over and over."
On Friday, he got an up-close look at FSU's "fourth-quarter drills" offseason conditioning program, as well as more of the facilities.
"The players lounge was really nice," Morris said. "I haven't seen that before, and the movie theater. With that theater, they can show you film and you can also watch your specific things you need to work on."
