CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Our annual Warchant Spring Recruiting Tour doesn't always make it up to North Carolina, but we had a couple of very good reasons to make that trip this year. And there's no better place to start than with a visit to the nation's No. 1 overall prospect, two-way standout Quavaris Crouch.

Crouch sat down with Warchant.com this past week to discuss the recruiting process, his challenging upbringing, what he likes about Florida State, which position he would like to play in college, and more.

Crouch focusing on linebacker; planning return trip to FSU, few others

Every major college football program in the country would love to have Quavaris Crouch on its roster.

He is a punishing hitter at linebacker. He is a game-breaker at running back.

Which position Crouch will ultimately play at the next level is still up for debate, and with a few months remaining until his senior year of high school, he's still not sure where he will play his college ball.

Tennessee, Alabama and Florida State have been three of the schools mentioned by him the most lately, while Clemson, Florida and others are certainly in the mix as well.

When Warchant caught up with Crouch at Harding University High School this past week, he was still feeling good about his trip to Florida State earlier this spring.

"I liked FSU a lot when I visited there," Crouch said. "I felt comfortable around the players and the coaches. The environment, facilities aren't really a big factor to me more than my comfort with the coaches, and how I would fit there. I really liked how I felt there when I visited."

Earlier in his decorated high school career, most figured Crouch would end at running back at the college level. But as the five-star prospect has grown more and more comfortable at linebacker, he actually sounds more interested in lining up on that side of the ball.

"I know I can bring a lot of power to the running back position, but I can make a major impact at linebacker," Crouch said. "I also know the longevity of running backs in the NFL isn't long, so I think my future could and would likely be at outside linebacker. I'm going to play linebacker a lot more this year, more so than running back.

"If I like it at linebacker, I think that's the position I'll focus on."

If that is the case, it could definitely be good news for Florida State.

The Seminoles will be breaking in three new starting linebackers this season, and first-year FSU linebackers coach Raymond Woodie has made it clear to Crouch that he would be a perfect fit for the Seminoles' new defense.

"Coach Woodie has been talking about linebacker a lot," the 6-foot-3, 225-pounder said. "I like him a good amount early on, but we are still just starting to build that bond, trust, which is going to be a big part of my recruitment. I really like how he plans on using the 'backers and know there is a big need there, so I'm looking forward to spending more time with Coach Woodie."

Crouch actually called Woodie this past Thursday night, and the two shared a lengthy conversation about how he might fit in with the 'Noles.
