Palm Beach Lakes -- DB Gurvan Hall
Florida State already is putting together a very dynamic defensive back class for 2018, and the Seminoles still have some top targets remaining on their board. One of those who appears to be very high on their list is currently committed to rival Miami -- Palm Beach Lakes DB Gurvan Hall.
We caught up with Hall, who is rated the nation's No. 16 safety prospect, during the latest stop on our Spring Recruiting Tour. With his combination of speed, quickness and size, Hall has the ability to play cornerback or safety at the next level -- which is the type of versatility FSU covets in its defensive backs.
And Hall told Warchant that he also is lining up at wide receiver this spring. The four-star DB said one of his advantages at receiver is that he knows what tactics opposing defensive backs are going to try to use against him.
"I like it," Hall said. "I don't think anyone can stop me."
Hall, who also is starring on his high school track team this spring, is not alone in that confidence. Palm Beach Lakes head coach Al Shipman could not say enough positive things about Hall's potential during our visit.
"First of all, there's no ceiling for him," Shipman said. "He's like a ballerina with his footwork, and he hits like a linebacker. He's going to get bigger and taller. He's a special player."
When it comes to recruiting, Hall said he developed strong feelings for Miami throughout the process, which is why he committed to the Hurricanes in late March.
"I've got a great bond with that staff," Hall said. "And at that time, I think that's the place for me and I like it there a lot."
Still, Hall is still being pursued by Florida State and many other schools. The Rivals250 member said that Alabama, Florida, FSU and LSU are the teams he hears from the most.
He said the Seminoles have been frequent visitors this spring, with linebackers coach Bill Miller visiting a practice this past week and defensive coordinator Charles Kelly visiting a couple weeks earlier.
Although he is still committed to the 'Canes, Hall didn't hide his interest in FSU.
"For me, what I really liked about them was I got a chance to see a real practice there," Hall said. "For some coaches, they might try to hide or not curse, and I saw Coach Jimbo [Fisher] getting after them. That's what I love. I want to see the real you.
"They love to compete. One of the guys I love so much is Derwin James. Him and Jamal Adams (the LSU defensive back who was selected in the first round by the New York Jets) are my favorites."
During his visit to Tallahassee, Adams also got the chance to connect with some of Florida State's players.
"I know Stanford Samuels, and I know his dad really well since he's (coached) our 7-on-7 team," Hall said. "We also run a lot of the same schemes FSU does on defense, so I'm comfortable with that. I knew Stanford would have a great spring."
Hall also has been impressed with his conversations with Kelly, who handles the Seminoles' defensive backs.
